Padres take 2 of 3 in a pretty wild series.

 

Game 1: By the 4th inning Garry Templeton was ¾ of the way to the cycle, having tripled to lead off the game and doubling in 2 runs in the second and then missing a hr in the 4th (being a W). He would not get another hit the rest of the game though. Templeton’s double gave SD a 3-0 lead but Knight and Concepcion hit back to back homers in the second to make it 3-2. Reds got runs in the 3rd and 4th to go up 4-3 but SD got 2 back in the fifth to recapture the lead only to see Cincy tie in with another run in the bottom of the 5th.  The teams exchanged runs in the 8th and SD won it in the 11th when Larry Herndon opened the inning with a homerun off of Tom Hume. Gossage got the win despite blowing the save in the 8th and Bob Shirley picked up the save for the Padres. The teams combined for 17 hits but 15 walks and 20 strikeouts as the strike zone was all over the place in this one.

 

Game 2: Johnnie Lemaster got a start at ss and it backfired as he allowed a couple singles on splits of 3 in the game. The big problem was 2 errors in the 5th that lead to of the 6 runs being unearned. Padres left the bases loaded in 2 consecutive innings and lost 8-5.

 

Game 3: Padres got 2 in the 2nd and 3rd but Cincy used a 3 run 5th to tie the game. Padres took the lead back in the 6th but Cincy tied it in the 7th. Padres got single runs in the 8th and 9th off of Sambito to win 7-5. Gossage picked up the save in this one.
