Game 1 Andre Dawson cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Montreal Expos outscored the Chicago NL Cubs 5 to 3.
Montreal took the lead for keeps in the 7th inning scoring one runner. Rick Miller laced a single. Willie Hernandez then bounced one in the dirt for a wild pitch. Ivan Dejesus then drew a walk. Ellis Valentine followed and he reached on an error scoring the run. Montreal finished with 9 hits while Chicago NL ended up with 6.
The victory went to Scott Sanderson (4-1) who went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs. Woodie Fryman recorded his 9th save. Hernandez (0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.
Game 2 Mike Schmidt homered and had 4 RBI as the Montreal Expos outscored the Chicago NL Cubs 10 to 1.
Schmidt had a big evening at the plate. He blasted a two-run home run (his 9th of the season) in the 1st inning, banged out a single which scored a run in the 5th inning and lined a one-base hit bringing in a run in the 8th inning. Montreal simply wore out the Chicago NL pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings.
The victory went to Steve Rogers (3-2) who went 7 innings, allowing 1 run. Randy Martz (0-1) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 5 runs in 3 innings.
Game 3 Catcher John Tamargo had 2 base hits and Vern Ruhle had a strong outing as the Montreal Expos outscored the Chicago NL Cubs 6 to 3.
Montreal jumped out to the early lead in the first inning plating an isolated run. Montreal had 8 hits for the night.
Ruhle (3-1) allowed 1 run in 7 innings, and picked up the victory. The loss was charged to Dennis Lamp (1-2). He allowed 4 runs and 5 hits in 5 and 2/3 innings.
Game 4 Rick Reuschel completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Chicago NL Cubs outscored the Montreal Expos in 10 innings 5 to 4.
The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. Finally, Chicago NL pulled the game out in the 10th inning. Jesus Figueroa stroked a base-hit. Bill Buckner followed and he grounded into a double play. Jerry Martin then doubled. Glenn Adams was up next and he doubled resulting in an exciting win for Chicago NL and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Chicago NL had a total of 9 hits for the game.
The win went to Reuschel (6-1) who allowed 4 runs in the game. Mike Proly (0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 3 hits in 2/3 of an inning.
