Subject: Cubs @ A's

Although the 1947 season ended for us during the underachieivingest autoplay any team has ever suffered, the schedule continues and the Cubs limped into Philadelphia to visit the A's.  After choking away the opener despite outplaying the A's by a tremendous margin, the Cubs inexplicably failed to fold up entirely and won the remaining two games....

Game 1: What other team could build a 21-10 advantage in total bases and still come out on the short end?  Only the Cubs, and only by allowing the A's to convert their 10 singles (and just 3 walks) into SEVEN runs.  And even then, only by committing not one, not two, but three blown-x plays in one 5-run surgical inning.  Final score: 7-6.

Chicago fought back from the hard-earned 6-2 deficit to tie the game in the 7th, only to choke up 3 singles and a game-losing sac fly a frame later.  The tying run reached 3rd base with 1 out in the CHN 9th but naturally could not score.

============================================================

Game 2: The visitors used an attack of singles, walks (8) and errors (4) to subdue the A's by the score of 9-1, 6-0 if you only count earned runs.  Hank Wyse has pitched very well this year for the Cubs but has almost nothing to show for it (because he pitches for the Cubs).  Today he held to A's to 6 singles and a double and 0 earned runs in 9 innings, raising his record to an impressive 4-7 despite his mediocre ERA of 2.79.

Clyde Kluttz homered for the second straight day to lead the CHN offense.  Wyse himself got a hit, scored a run and drove in a pair.

============================================================

Game 3: In that ultra-rarest of events, the Cubs actually won a game that perhaps we shouldn't have (the inverse of the far more common scenario witnessed most recently just two games ago).  Chicago managed only 5 hits all day, but one was a triple and two were homers; the A's got 17 baserunners but LOBbed 12 and 3 more were erased on DPs.  Final score: 5-2.

We took an early 4-0 lead against Kirby Higbe while CHN starter Frank Papish dodged most every bullet that came at him, permitting just 1 run in 6.2 IP.  That run came after Papish left the mound in the 7th and Paul Erickson issued a 2-out, bases-loaded walk before Johnny Schmitz replaced him and retired the side.

Schmitz allowed back-to-back doubles leading off the bottom of the 9th, at which point the Cubbie manager decided to avoid his brilliantly underachieving closer (the one with the 6.66 ERA who has singlehandedly cost us at least a dozen games this year) and go with little-used Ralph Hamner.

Hamner rewarded his manager's confidence by immediately loading the bases for the A's with still nobody out.  But then he fanned the next two batters and got Hal Peck to dribble a weak grounder to first to end it.  Final score: 5-2.

Alan
