Subject: Reds @ Padres
A: A .500 team. Q: What do you get when you combine first-place talent with last-place luck? Last week there were some indications that the Cincy bullpen, led by Least Valuable Player Joe Sambito, was returning to typical form. After this week, no doubt remains.... Choke #1: Mario Soto has a weak game (6 IP, 5 baserunners) by his standards, but the Reds had a 3-2 lead in the ninth despite a large advantage in LOB. Sambito had worked a perfect 8th inning, but that was just a bluff. A Montanez leadoff single followed by a gopher ball to Ruppert Jones ended the game. Final score: 4-3. Choke #2: Cincy starter Tom Mediocre was in his usual form again (unfortunately), but the Reds came back with a pair of runs in the 8th to take a 4-3 lead. Mark Clear was lifted after two perfect relief innings so that Joe Sambito could be handed another choke opportunity in the ninth. He nearly failed (Sambito did get two outs) but a walk and two singles later the choke was completed. Final score: 5-4. Choke #3: Here's a novel idea: stop using Joe Sambito! A 5-1 Cincinnati lead in the 8th vanishes when Frank Pastore falls apart and Joe Price & Tom Hume finish the job. A 6-spot in that frame turns the 5-1 lead into a 7-5 final. The lone Cincy victory of the series came in game 2 when Charlie Leibrandt (of all people) tossed 5 effective innings and Tom Hume labored in relief for 4 more as the Reds won by the score of 5-2.
