4 not very close games, even though the scores make them appear somewhat close. KC wins first two, before Rice ties 2 records in game 3 to get Boston going for the split.
Game 1: Down 4-1 after 3, Boston uses a 4 run 4th to take the lead. KC uses a 4 run 7th to take the game 9-6. KC outhit Boston 17-8.
Game 2: Boston managed just 3 hits, one Yaz’s 2nd homer of the series while KC is held to just 12 hits in winning 6-1. Another 4 run inning broke this one open.
Game 3: Jim Rice tied 2 SMILEY records (both set by teammates) as this one was ugly from the get go. Rice hit 4 homers (3 off Splittorf’s card) to tie Dwight Evans league mark and drove in 10 runs to tie Rico Petrocelli’s league mark. Rice hit a 3 run homer in the first but Amos Otis answered with a 3 run shot in the bottom of the inning. Rice added 2 run shots in the 5th and 6th and another 3 run shot in the 8th. Both teams had 18 hits, with 11 of Boston’s being extra base hits. Stapleton and Evans both hit 3 doubles in the game. KC got 3 9th inning runs to make the final 14-10.
Game 4: Boston added 6 more extra base hits, including Yaz’s 3rd homer of the series and won 10-4 while holding KC to just 12 hits again.
For the series Boston outscored KC 31-29 while KC outhit Boston 59-43 as both staffs served up batting practice. Boston had 21 extra base hits to KC’s 11.
