Game 1 Jerry Reuss completed the game without help from the bullpen and right fielder Terry Puhl left the yard and had 2 RBI at Dodger Stadium as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Montreal Expos 3 to 1.
Reuss (8-2) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.62 to 3.30. Montreal went down without a fight in the 9th.
Vern Ruhle (4-5) took the loss. He allowed 2 runs and 6 hits in 4 innings.
Game 2 Steve Rogers came through with a solid 9 innings as the Montreal Expos defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 6 to 1 at Dodger Stadium.
In the 2nd inning Montreal went on top for good plating an isolated run using 2 hits. Montreal totaled 9 on the night.
Rogers (6-3) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Bob Welch (6-2) took the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
' Rogers pitched a gem of a game', Billy Vanson recounted. 'He kept our batters off balance the entire game.'
Game 3
Don Sutton had a strong outing at Dodger Stadium where the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Montreal Expos 1 to 0.
The game's lone run was scored in the bottom of the 2nd inning. That early scoring held up. Montreal threatened in the 9th but Los Angeles was able to put down the rally.
Sutton (4-5) went 6 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Sutton got help from Steve Howe who was credited with his 15th save. Bill Gullickson (6-2) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 1 run and 2 hits in 7 innings.
'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Steve Bivens said. 'It's bad enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves, that's really bad.'
Game 4 The Montreal Expos registered 4 runs in the 11th inning and defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in 11 innings by a score of 7 to 3 at Dodger Stadium.
The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. Montreal won it in the 11th inning. The critical plate appearance was by Ivan Dejesus who silenced the crowd when he laced a base-hit scoring two baserunners. Montreal had 8 hits for the afternoon.
