Subject: Detroit at Philadelphia (AL)
Four excellent one-run games, but the visitors can only win the opener.
G1 Detroit appeared to have this one well-within-grasp, but the hometown A's decided a 3-0 9th inning deficit was no issue. Ray Coleman singled home Sam Chapman with 1 out, and with 2 outs, Jack Phillips delivered a 2-run PH double to plate both Pete Suder and Coleman. The game was tied and headed to extra innings. In the 10th,Detroit immediately jumped back on top with a George Kell single delivering Roy Cullenbine who had walked (131st BB on the season) and stolen 2nd base. Philadelphia was non-plussed. The A's Eddie Joost and Coleman walked to bringup Suder with 2 outs. He rolled 2-5 single, and we had a tie game, 4-4. Two innings later, in the 12th, new Tiger Hank Greenberg sent one out of Shibe Park to put Detroit up for good, 5-4. Stu Hudson who had allowed the run in the 10th, pitched a 1-2-3 12th to record a win for his 3 IP of relief. Detroit out-hit Phil. 10-7, but the A's had 8 walks to the Tigers' 4. Therefore, Philly out-LOB'bed Detroit, 9-7.
Final Score: Detroit 5, Philadelphia 4, 12 innings WP- Hudson 3-3, LP- McCahon 6-8 HR- Trout (3), Greenberg (10)
G2 featured a tremendous pitching duel between Hal Newhouser (8 1/3 8 1 1 2 9) and Bill Dietrich (7 61 0 3 4). Both pitchers allowed a run in the 4th and then cruised from there. Dietrich was replaced in the 8th by Bob Savage who gave up 2 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings, but no runs scored on him. Meanwhile, in the bottom of the 9th, the A's struck for the GW run when with 1 out, Coleman, Mike Guerra, and PH Phillips laced consecutive singles. Coleman had 3 of Philadelphia's 9 hits while .ittle-used Doc Cramer had 3 of Detroit's 8 safeties.
Final Score: Philadelphia 2, Detroit 1 WP- Savage 11-4, LP- Newhouser 15-15 HR- none
G3 Philly bunched all of its runs between the 2nd and 7th innings this time- taking a 6-3 lead when Guerra and starting pitcher Paul Machildon both had RBI singles after the stretch. Detroit tried to tie it up in the 8th. With 2 outs, George Kell's single was followed by Hoot Evers' 9th home run. That would be the closest the Tigers would get as reliever Russ Christopher was summoned to retire the last 4 batters in order. Ferris Fain, Hank Majeski and Suder each had 2 hits for the winning A's, but C Mike Guerra raised his average all the way to .387 with a 4-game. Kell had 3 of Detroit's 9 hits. For the 2nd game in 3, Detroit's starting pitcher homered.
Final Score: Philadelphia 6, Detroit 5 WP- Marchildon 13-10, LP- Hutchinson 13-12, SV- Christopher (24) HR- Hutchinson (2), Cullenbine (19), Evers (9)
G4 The first 3 games were close as could be. Game 4 was even closer without going extra innings. Philadelphia broke out in front with single runs in the 1st and 3rd on sac flies by Majeski and Fain. After a 2-out error by Fain in the 5th, Vic Wertz launched his 11th HR of the season to tie it up, 2-2. Philadelphia immediately re-took the lead in the bottom of the 5th when CF Evers dropped Chapman's flyball with 2 outs to allow Fain to score. Starter Dick Fowler (8 11 4 2 5 3) held that 3-2 lead into the 9th when he was pulled after Cramer singled and PH Pat Muheading to the bottom of the 9th. For the 3rd time in 4 games the home team scored in the 9th inning. PH Sherm Lollar walked in advance of Fain's single to start the inning with men at 1st and 3rd. Joost's flyball plated PR Peck with the tying run. Majewski followed with a double before Chapman was hit by a pitch to load the bases with 1 out. Suder singled home Fain with the winning run for Philadelphia. Catcher Hal Wagner of Detroit led both teams with a 4-for-4 finale while Fain and Majeski were each 3-for-4 for the A's.
Final Score: Philadelphia 5, Detroit 4 WP- Savage 12-4, LP- Harrist 7-4 HR- Wertz (11), Mullin (23) |
