Los Angeles had 3 runs cross the plate in the top of the 5th inning when they had 6 base hits. Bob Welch started the inning off right when he laced a base-hit. Davey Lopes stepped up next and he delivered a single. Jim Morrison then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Pedro Guerrero followed and he doubled knocking home two runners. Ron Cey stepped into the box and laced a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. San Francisco had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Welch(7-3) went 8 innings allowing 4 runs for the victory. Steve Howe was credited with his 17th save. Bob Knepper(2-8) took the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 10 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. Bob Mittleman was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'
