The Jays faced the Big Green Machine expecting to be steamrolled, and for two games we were not disappointed. But the visitors came back to get a split in a marathon 4th game (17 innings) despite the incredible performance of both the Toronto bullpen and the unlikely heroics of a little-used Oakland player.... Game 1: Dave Stieb gave the A's 3 quick runs, but the contest was once again tied before Oakland came to bat in the second. However, Toronto would not score any further and game stayed close only because the A's stranded 10 runners. Final score: 5-3, as Matt Keough tossed a 4-hitter and was in complete control after the TOA second. Game 2: The Jays were outhit by the count of 12-6 but Geoff Zahn kept the game close enough that it took an extra-inning choke for Toronto to lose 3-2. Rickey Henderson drove in Jeff Newman in the 10th to give the A's the victory. Steve McCatty went 9.2 innings for Billy Martin, but Dave Smith got the W by retiring one batter in the TOA 10th. Game 3: Mike Norris and Jim Clancy both tossed complete games, Clancy coming out on top with a 5-hit shutout in Toronto's 6-0 win. Ted Cox & Damaso Garcia came through with some late-inning lightning to turn the narrow 2-0 lead into something even our bullpen (though not needed after all) probably couldn't easily blow. Game 4: A ridiculous performance in which the TOA bullpen choked THREE TIMES with Oakland down to their final outs, but the Blue Jays finally prevailed by building a 5-run lead in the 17th inning. Rick Langford was pulled after tossing only 11 innings for the home team; the visitors put 9 runs on the board after that point. Up 3-2 in the OAA 9th, Jerry Garvin allowed a triple to noted speedster Tony Perez, who scored on a sac fly. In the 13th, Marc Hill's solo homer with 2 outs tied the game again. Two innings later, TOA was up by 3 and Oakland had nobody on base with two outs. Rising to the challenge, the bullpen choked again, and again it was Marc Hill providing the heroics with a 3-run homer. Hill now has 6 HR in 37 AB in 1980, exceeding his actual HR rate by about 700%. Finally in the 17th the Jays scored 5 times, that being the only way to ensure that Hill could not tie the game with one swing of his Ruthian bat. Final score: 12-7. Alan |
