Subject: Detroit @ Washington

G1 Schoolboy Rowe (8 7 2 2 3 5) got the Tigers off to a good start in the opener by throwing 8 strong innings.  Yet, Detroit trailed, 2-1, because of Buddy Lewis's 6th inning leadoff triple and Buddy Rosar's subsequent bases-loaded single.  (Are there a lot of guys named Buddy on the Sens or what?)  The Tigers were undeterred as they batted in the 9th.  PH Les Fleming led off with a double and one out later, Dick Wakefield singled Fleming to third base.  Roy Cullenbine then walked to load the bases.  2nd Baseman Eddie Mayo then singled home the tying and go-ahead runs to dishearten the 30,100 Senator fans.  In the bottom of the 9th, Detroit's Earl Harrist retired 3 consecutive hitters for his 3rd save.

Final Score: Detroit 3, Washington 2
WP- Rowe 6-12, LP- Ferrick 1-4, SV- Harrick (3)
HR- none

G2 When Rowe was good, Detroit's Fred Hutchinson was great (9 5 0 0 3 6) in the second contest.  The RH has not achieved the 20 wins he had on his card, but he had plenty for Washington.  The Tigers' Hoot Evers scored half of Detroit's 4 runs, and Hutchinson himself had 2 of Detroit's 5 hits.  Despite losing his 12th game, the Sens' Ray Scarborough (5 2 1 1 1 1) pitched well and had 1 of Washington's 5 hits in his only PA.

Final Score: Detroit 4, Washington 0
WP- Hutchinson 15-12, LP- Scarborough 7-12
HR- none

G3 was the 3rd straight pitchers' duel.  Washington's Walt Masterson (7 2/3 7 1 1 3 6) shut out Detroit until he faltered a bit in the 8th.  Masterson allowed the first run of the game when Hoot Evers launched a 2-out homer.  Washington came back quickly in the bottom of the 8th as Pete Castiglione doubled home Connie Ryan (who doubled 2 batters earlier).   The game was decided in the 9th.   With one out Mickey Vernon doubled, and Buddy Lewis' RBI-single brought home the first-baseman with the winning run.

Final Score: Washington 2, Detroit 1
WP- Gromek 7-9, LP- Gorsica 1-5
HR- Evers (10)

G4 Both teams were due for a scoring outburst, and each rallied in the series finale.  Here's the (fairly) quick scoring summary.  Detroit struck first with 2 in the 2nd on Bill Swift's RBI single and Ed Mierkiewicz's DP grounder.   Washington's Sam Dente then hurt his 1948 club by singling home two runs to tie in the bottom of the 2nd.  The Senators took a 3-2 lead in the 3rd when Rosar singled home Vernon.  The one-run margin held until the 6th when the Tigers' Don Kolloway and Swift hit back-to-back doubles to tie the game, and then  starting pitcher Virgil Trucks singled home Swift to make the score, 4-3, Detroit.    The next inning saw Washington re-tie the game on Joe Grace's RBI triple.  In the 8th, Detroit loaded the bases with walks after one was out.  Reliever Art Houtteman singled home two runs and Hoot Evers singled home another to make the score, 7-4.  In the 9th inning, the Tigers broadened the lead when 1B Roy Cullenbine singled home the final 2 runs of the day for Detroit.  Washington was not quite done as they also tacked on two runs in the 9th on Stan Spence's 2-run home run to make the final score, 9-6.  Grace led both clubs with 3 hits.

Final Score: Detroit 9, Washington 6
WP- Houtteman 5-5, LP-  H.White 1-6, SV- Starr (1)
HR- Spence (25)
