Subject: Cubs @ Pirates
An uninformed observer, seeing the absolutely incredible statistical improbability of numerous events in this series, would have to conclude that the losing team was doing so on purpose. An informed observer would simply realize: "These are the Cubs". We began the unluckiest season ever by losing for 2 straight weeks against teams less talented than us (Pirates, Cardinals) and making instant pennant contenders out of them. The final two weeks of the 1947 season will undoubtedly be more of exactly the same (only the location of the games are reversed), as we now so clearly demonstrate.... Game 1: Our theme this series, aside from costly 2-out blown-x's and one surgical split card after another (guess who they favored?) was the good old "roll the loaded column, find the out" for CHN batters. In particular, by rolling 2's and 12's galore. The Cubs racked up almost as many errors (3) today as hits (5), and way more than runs (0). Final score: 6-0. Down 4-0 almost immediately, CHN starter Hank Wyse settled down and lasted 7 IP. Mop-up reliever Claude Passeau gave up the 2-out (of course) surgical split card triple in the 8th to speedster Ralph Kiner, which was immediately followed by our 19th 2-out blown-x play of the day, donating 2 more runs to the Pirates. ================================================== Game 2: Don't ever think it can't get worse for the Cubs. Today we turned Sam Zoldak into Cy Young by allowing him to toss a 2-hit shutout as we continued to permit surgical split card hits whenever necessary. Final score: 4-0. HAL made Zoldak unhittable by following a very simple formula: have him pitch 9 innings ***WITHOUT EVEN ONCE*** rolling in his loaded 5 column, a feat that could not possibly be accomplished against any team other than the Cubs. ================================================== Game 3: Stop the presses, the Cubs actually scored today against that star-studded Pittsburgh staff! We got 2 runs in the first inning the only way we possibly could -- by getting no hits at all. Four consecutive walks were followed by a passed ball, thus completing the one frame out of 27 where anything even remotely went our way. After LOBbing 3 in RISP in the first 3 innings (while turning that 2-0 lead into a quick 5-2 deficit) we loaded the bases in the fourth and figured to find some way to score. Nope -- how about a nice, timely ***TRIPLE PLAY*** on another one of our 2-or-12 dice rolls!!! Though continuing our RISP = LOB theme, we actually fought back to the the game in the 7th. That meant it was time to choke up some more surgical split card power. And so we did, with another sprinkle of 2-out, blown-x fairy dust for good measure. Final score: 9-5. Alan |
