Subject: Cubs @ Pirates
The Cubs' utterly luckless 1947 season mercifully comes to and end, visiting the Buccos for the second time in 2 weeks. While we weren't quite the same pushovers from last week, we did manage to lose 2 games in the manner that has become ever so typical for us.... Game 1: Chicago had a chance at a 2-run split-card homer in the first; needed a 10, got an 11, didn't score at all. Then with 2 outs, the bases empty, no score in the PIN 3rd, we allowed a surgical split card (1) triple to a non-hitting pitcher. The next batter got him home on -- what else? -- a blown x-play single by a '2' fielder. Pittsburgh's 3's and 4's were perfect in the field, BTW. The Pirates scoring was completed in the 6th on a surgical split card (1) gopher by mighty Erv Dusak. A CHN batter had the same chance as Dusak shortly thereafter, missed it by 2 of course. The Cubs broke the shutout only with 2 outs in the 9th on 2 singles, a passed ball which advanced them and a wild pitch which plated one but HAL made sure that our .370 hitter at the plate rolled an empty column on the pitchers card to end it. Final score: 2-1. ============================================================ Game 2: It looked like more of the same when the Cubs loaded the bases with one out in the second, and naturally failed to score. The only reason there was one out was that a CHN batter couldn't manage to hit a 1-17 chance at a triple to open the frame, and found the out instead, as so often we do when faced with a mere 85% chance of success at anything. But somehow we finally broke though and pushed some runs across the plate, breaking the scoreless tie in the 5th. Luckless Hank Wise (5-10 record, astronomical 3.26 ERA) lasted just long enough to earn a tremendously rare W. Final score: 7-0, and it deserved to be even more lopsided (LOB: CHN - 11, PIN - 3). Wyse and reliever Doyle Lade combined on a 3-hitter. ============================================================ Game 3: Murry Dickson has underachieved, like 98% of his teammates, but at least he sometimes gets offensive support. How else could he have 14 wins on a team like this? Three hits in the CHN 3rd produced 3 runs, which represented our entire attack save for an insurance run in the 9th as we eked out a 4-2 win. After reliever Jess Flores threw 9 pitches (8 balls, one strike, 2 free passes), Ralph Hamner closed it out for his 4th save. Pittsburgh's offense consisted of solo gophers by Torgeson & Kiner. ============================================================ Game 4: Fittingly, the Cubs final road game of 1947 was yet another in our infinite line of massive chokes, as a 4-0 lead turned into a 5-4 defeat. Nobody does it better. Or more often. Flores, who apparently wasn't cut out to be a reliever, had another miserable showing and choked up the final 2 losing runs. CHN's scoring was limited to one swing of Don Lund's bat, as 150 games into the season HAL finally permitted his to roll his loaded 3 column. It came with the bases loaded in the 3rd, resulting in a grand slam and a temporary 4-0 lead. Alan |
