Welcome to the Twilight Zone: Reds win 3 against the best team in the league, two of them by one run, Sambito gets a save, the Cincy bullpen pitches 8.2 innings and gives up ZERO runs.... Game 1: Cincinnati turns two key DPs and overcomes Tommy Gopherball's mediocre (to be charitable) outing to win by the score of 5-4. After the Reds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Tommy made it 2-1 Expos with (what else?) a gopher ball before retiring a batter. But we got a bases-loaded GIDP to end that inning, retook the lead, blew it again, then won the game on a pair of doubles off of Elias Sosa in the seventh and Seaver actually got the quite undeserved W. Ron LeFlore ended a MON threat in the ninth, and the game, by hitting into a DP. Game 2: Mario Soto took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth, so of course - these are still the Reds after all - we ended up going to extra innings. While the pen technically allowed no runs, the two bases-loaded singles Tom Hume allowed, good for 3 runs, did make somewhat of a difference. However in the 11th, MON wound up with Jim Wohlford playing shortstop and his two blown x-plays gave the Reds 3 runs and the game when Joe Sambito (!) pitched a 1-2-3 11th to earn the save with Hume vulturing the win. Game 3: Milt Wilcox saw his 3-2 lead vanish in the sixth when he gave up 4 runs, but the Reds came back to tie the game in the 8th on a 3-spot then beat Sid Monge in the 9th on Davey Concepcion's homer. Tom Hume (7-1) got the W for second consecutive day as the Reds racked up 19 baserunners and stopped stranding them (11) just long enough to eke out the victory, with some help from the Montreal defense (4 unearned runs).
