Game 1 Jason Thompson jacked one out of the ballyard and had 4 RBI as the phenomenal Montreal Expos beat the New York NL Mets by a score of 10 to 3.
Thompson had a good evening at the plate. He bombed a two-run dinger (his 20th of the season) in the 1st inning and hit a single scoring two baserunners in the 4th inning. Montreal had 13 hits for the night while New York NL had 7.
Steve Rogers (10-3) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 5 innings. Rogers got help from Pete Redfern who was credited with his 2nd save. Tommy Boggs (2-4) ended up with the loss. He gave up 9 runs in 4 innings of work.
Game 2 It was a laugher out at Shea Stadium. The Montreal Expos squad ripped New York NL pitching for a total of 9 runs. Vern Ruhle (8-5), with relief help from Mike Proly, shut-down New York NL.
The game started off with Montreal taking the lead in the first scoring 2 runners on 3 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Ruhle and Montreal. That was all the run support Ruhle required. Montreal ended up with 13 hits for the game while New York NL had 9.
Proly recorded the save, his 2nd. Don Aase (4-5) absorbed the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 8 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.
Game 3 Craig Swan whiffed 10 batters as the Montreal Expos were badly beaten by the New York NL Mets, 10 to 0.
Swan (3-4) was virtually untouchable. He didn't allow much, just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 4.85 to 4.18. New York NL rapped out 12 hits for the night.
Bill Gullickson (8-3) ended up with the loss. Steve Bivens was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'
Game 4 In a two run game the New York NL Mets got by the Montreal Expos by the score of 6 to 4.
In the bottom of the 7th inning New York NL scored 3 runs with the help of 4 hits. They ended up being the winning runs. Montreal had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Pat Zachry(5-2) got the win allowing 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Jim Kaat gained credit for his 2nd save. Sid Monge(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief.
