Red Sox score a run in the first inning when DiMaggio singled home Pesky. This 1-0 score held up until the eighth inning as Poat and Shea matched zeros (a lot help from HAL who was pulling almost nothing but high splits for both teams). With two out in the bottom of the eighth Charlie Keller bats for Shea and launches his 12th home run of the season to knot the score at 1-1. Joe Page came on for the Yankees in the ninth and promptly gives up a single to Rudy York. Jake Jones was sent in to run for York but was erased on a force play by Tebbetts. Page strikes out Culberson who hit for Poat. Pesky gets hit by a pitch and Page is forced to face Boudreau who drives a clean single to center and Tebbetts beats the throw home. Page escapes further damage by passing Williams intentionally and getting DiMaggio. Johnny Murphy comes in to attempt his 27th save of the season and he gives up a lead off single to Berra. At this point I’m starting to sweat bullets. DiMaggio comes in to run for Berra. Both Ennis and Henrich ground out advancing DiMaggio to third. McQuinn hits a low-liner to right (ballpark 1-7) but HAL deals a ‘9’ and Mele comes on to snag the line drive.
Boston now has a 2 game lead while even in the loss column with the Yankees.
