Joe Dobson (14-9) and Allie Reynolds (10-11) squared off in this critical final game of the three game set that could possibly end the Yankees season and send the Red Sox to the World Series.
Dobson and Reynolds matched zeros for the first four innings. Then Reynolds walked Garagiola and Dobson to start the top of the fifth. Pesky flew out for the first out and Garagiola advanced to third. Reynolds then uncorked a wild pitch to score Garagiola and advance Dobson to second. This turned out to be a big play as Boudreau then lined a single to center to score Dobson. Reynolds escaped further damage, but he was done for the day. Bob Lemon came on in relief to pitch 4 stellar innings of scoreless baseball. Would two runs be enough for the Red Sox?
Dobson sailed into the eighth inning with a four-hit shutout but ran into trouble when Cass Michaels singled, stole second and advanced to third on Joe Dimaggio’s pinch hit single. With nobody out, Manager Steve decided to stick with Dobson who got Berra on a shallow fly to left. Ennis followed with another fly ball to left that was deep enough to score Michaels and then Dimaggio went to second on Williams throwing error attempting to throw Michaels out at home. Joe Dobson rewarded Manager Steve’s confidence when he struck out the dangerous Tommy Henrich to end the inning. Johnny Murphy came on to pitch a scoreless ninth inning for his 28th save and the Red Sox completed a difficult sweep in New York to clinch the American League pennant with a 96-58 record.
