Subject: Detroit @ Washington

The Tigers played a perfect final week and won their last 8 (and 10 of the final 11) games of the year.  This allowed the franchise to avoidback-to-back sub .500 seasons since the 1950-53 teams all had losing marks.

G1 In the first of two fine pitching performances by the visitors, Schoolboy Roe (9 8 0 0 5 2) stranded 14 Senator batters.  The righthander also moved to .500 on the year (4-4, 3.15) since being acquired by Detroit.  Two-run innings in the 3rd and 7th to back were utilized by the Tigers to provide Roe with the necessary support to win.  Washington actually out-hit Detroit, 8-0, and had 3 hitters (Vernon, Travis, and Castiglione) who collected 2 hits compared to 2 hitters (Cullenbine, Kell) for the Tigers.

Final Score: Detroit 4, Washington 0
WP- Roe (8-12), LP- Candini (1-4)
HR- Kell (7)

G2 This time it was Fred Hutchinson (9 10 0 0 4 7) who adroitly stranded 14 Washington hitters.  The Senators had RISP in 6 different innings, and left the bases loaded in 4 innings.  Forthe game, Washington went an imperfect 0-for-10 with RISP.    Hal Wagner provided an RBI double in the 2nd inning to put the Tigers up, 2-0.  Later, in the 5th, Hutchinson helped hicause by doubling home a run before Detroit added a 3rd tally on George Kell's bases-loaded fielder's choice.  Once again, Washington out-hit Detroit, 10-9. Four different Senators (Ryan, Grace, Vernon, and Castiglione) notched 2-hit games while Mullin, Wagner, and Hutchinson smacked 2 hits for the Tigers.

Final Score: Detroit 3, Washington 0
WP- Hutchinson 16-12, LP- Pieretti 3-4
HR- none

G3 The Senators stopped their scoreless streak at 19 innings when Mickey Vernon tripled to lead off the 2nd and scored on a wild pitch.  Washington stretched its lead to 3-0 in the 6th when Buddy Lewis tripled home Castiglione before scoring when Ray Mueller singled him home with 2 outs.  It appeared Mickey Haefner (6 1/3 6 3 3 5 5) would make that 3-0 margin hold up, but the 7th inning proved decisive for Detroit.  With one out, Dick Wakefield broke up the shutout with his 14th homer of the season.  Kell singled and Evers walked which caused Detroit to call upon new Tiger slugger Hank Greenburg to pinch-hit against new pitcher, lefty Scott Cary.  Greenberg promptly deposited Cary's pitch into the cheap seats to make the score, 4-3, in favor of Detroit.  The Washington notched one last run in the 8th, but it would be too little, too late.

For the 3rd straight game, Washington had more hits, 12-11.  SS Pete Castiglione led both teams with 3 hits in the game (and ended up 7-for-13 in the 3-game series which raised his average to .280).  In that fateful 7th inning, the Tigers Roy Cullenbine walked as a pinch-hitter to knock home a run.  It was his 161st BB of the season and may allow him to lead the league in 1947.

Final Score: Detroit 7, Washington 4
WP- Newhouser 18-15, LP- Cary 0-1, SV- Gorsica (3)
HR- Wakefield (14), Greenberg (11)
