One run was the difference at Memorial Stadium as theBaltimore Orioles
offense put up 7 runs on the scoreboard in the 3rd inning and defeated the
New York AL Yankees 7 to 6.

Baltimore did all the necessary damage in the 3rd inning as they ripped New
York AL for 7 runs on 3 hits.  That was all the offense they were to need.
New York AL scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky pitching kept them
from victory.

The winning pitcher was Bob Shaw(9-5) who allowed 5 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.
Shaw got help from Moe Drabowsky who was credited with his 18th save.  Sam
McDowell(6-7) was the losing pitcher.  Baltimore scored big getting 7 runs
off him in 5 innings.

First baseman Joe Pepitone hit one over the fence and AlDowning dominated
striking out 10 Baltimore batters as the New York AL Yankees topped the
Baltimore Orioles by a score of 7 to 4 at Memorial Stadium.

Downing(6-14) gave New York AL a solid outing.  He was reached for 5 hits and
no walks in 7 innings and allowed 3 gopher balls.  The Baltimore batters went
down meekly in the bottom of the 9th.

Downing got help from Dooley Womack who was credited with his 9th save.  Wally
Bunker(7-5) suffered the loss.  He allowed New York AL 6 runs in 5 and 1/3
innings of work.

Downing was asked about his big strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little
odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a
running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet.  Just
strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'
