Game 1 Scott Sanderson carried a no-hitter into the 8th inning as the Montreal Expos defeated the Atlanta Braves by the score of 8 to 1 at Fulton Co. Stadium.
Sanderson (13-3) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Atlanta hitters. He allowed just 3 hits and no walks in 9 innings. The right-handed Sanderson had his no-hit bid broken up by Dale Murphy who doubled with one out in the 8th inning. Montreal managed 13 in their victory.
Rick Matula (9-6) took the loss. By surrendering 6 runs in 2/3 of an inning his ERA jumped from 2.94 to 3.44.
Game 2 Ivan Dejesus collected 2 extra-base hits and scored 3 times at Fulton Co. Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the Atlanta Braves 11 to 3.
Montreal took the lead for keeps in the top of the 6th inning when they tallied 4 runs on 3 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Mike Schmidt who quieted the home crowd when he smacked a single which was good for two runs. Montreal had 13 hits for the game and Atlanta had 9.
The victory went to Vern Ruhle (11-6) who went 5 innings, allowing 2 runs. John Denny (4-5) suffered the loss. He surrendered 9 hits and 5 walks in 7 innings.
Game 3 Bill Gullickson went the distance and third baseman Mike Schmidt homered at Fulton Co. Stadium as the strong Montreal Expos beat the Atlanta Braves by the count of 7 to 1.
Montreal scored 6 runs in the 6th inning when they had 7 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by Jason Thompson who silenced Fulton Co. Stadium as he lofted a three-run bomb (his 24th of the season). Montreal rapped out 10 hits for the night.
Gullickson (11-3), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Phil Niekro (6-12) absorbed the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.
Montreal extended their winning streak to 6 games.
Game 4 The streaking Montreal Expos easily topped the Atlanta Braves; the final score was 10 to 3.
In the top of the 7th inning Montreal went on top for good when they scored 3 runs on 3 hits. The big moment was provided by Gary Carter who silenced the crowd when he lined a single which was good for two runs. Montreal ended up with 15 hits for the game while Atlanta had 12.
The victory was credited to Steve Rogers (14-3) who went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs. Joe Niekro (9-8) was given the loss. He allowed 12 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
