The series moved to St. Louis, where Tex Hughson squared off against Ken Burkhart.

Both teams got RISP in the first but neither scored.  Sam Mele singled to open the BOA 4th but was picked off; that cost a run when Joe Garagiola's homer two batters later was just a solo shot.

Neither side even got a runner to second base from the second through the seventh (unless you count Garagiola's brief trot around the bases) and the score remained 1-0 into the 8th.

Johnny Pesky opened that frame for Boston with a triple and at that point Burkhart unraveled -- unfortunately for the Cards, so did the two pitchers that followed and a timely gaffe by the defense proved very costly.  Boston would get no further hits in the inning but would still manage to score FOUR runs:

Burkhart walked Lou Boudreau and then wild-pitched Pesky home & Boudreau to second.  Ken Heintzelman came in to face Ted Williams with the count 1-0 and got the Splinter to tap a grounder to third on his first pitch.  But Whitey Kurowski flubbed it.  Heintzelman walked Dom Dimaggio and then left with the bases jammed.

Karl Drews took over and, like Heintzelman, got the Boston batter to swing at his first pitch and hit a harmless grounder.  Skeeter Newsome came up with this one and nailed Boudreau at the plate for the first out.  But Drews' next 8 pitches missed the strike zone and the pair of walks forced in 2 runs.  Rudy York followed with a sac fly to make the score 5-0 in favor of the visitors.

The Cardinals, just like in game 2, decided not to go down without a fight when faced with a large deficit.  And, also like in game 2, they didn't quite dig completely out of the hole.

A Jerry Priddy single followed by a Ducky Medwick homer cut the margin to 5-2 in the 8th.

If St. Louis could have gotten even one hit in the 9th, they would have tied the game.  As it was, they scored twice without any hits at all.  Walks to Stan Musial and pinch-hitter Johnny Hopp spelled the end of Hughson, and Johnny Murphy took the mound to notch his third save of the series.

Or *try* to, anyway.  Murphy plunked Enos Slaughter with a pitch to load the bases, then walked Priddy to force in a run.  Slow-footed catcher Del Rice hustled down the line and beat out a 3-6-3 DP attempt and another run scored, but Medwick popped up to Pesky to end it.  Final score: 5-4.
