Joe Dobson took the mound for Boston and tried to close out the Cardinals, and he didn't do anything inconsistent with that goal for 6 shoutout innings.  A 2-out single by Ted Williams in the 3rd put the Sox on top by a run and solo homers by Sam Mele and Rudy York off of SLN starter Red Munger made it 3-0 one frame later.

Then 4-0 in the 5th via another Williams RBI single and -- almost -- 5-0 in the 6th when Bobby Doerr singled leading off and was wild pitched to second but then erased at the plate by Barney McCosky following York's single to left.

With the score still 4-0 in the 7th, the Cardinals finally mustered the strength to attempt another belated (and probably futile) comeback attempt -- just like the ones in games 2 & 3.

Light-hitting shortstop Skeeter Newsome opened the St. Louis 7th with a slow grounder to Johnny Pesky at third, who should have eaten it but threw it away instead.  A pair of singles immediately followed, with Newsome scoring on Whitey Kurowski's hit.

Dobson exited the contest and Boo Ferriss replaced him.  McCosky worked the count and fought off a pitch for a bloop single that loaded the bases with still nobody out.

Enos Slaughter flew out to Mele in right field, but Musial was out by a mile when he tried to tag up and score and the scoring threat was greatly reduced.  But not terminated: Jerry Priddy delivered a 2-out single that made the score 4-2 before Del Rice fanned to end the inning.

The Cards went down without incident in the 8th and Johnny Murphy looked to rack up save #4 as he began the 9th.  Musial lined out but then Kurowski singled and McCosky walked.  Slaughter's single advanced everyone 2 bases and made the score 4-3.

Priddy tapped a roller to Lou Boudreau but Doerr was unable to complete the DP and McCosky scored -- and the Cardinals finally achieved a complete comeback!

Ken Keltner PH for reliever Karl Drews to open the 10th and Murphy lost him on 4 pitches.  But Terry Moore grounded to Boudreau and this time the Red Sox were able to turn two.

Lightweight Newsome then doubled with 2 outs.... and beat Slaughter's throw to the plate with the game winning run when Musial singled to right as the crowd went nuts!  Final score: 5-4 in 10 innings, and the series goes back to Boston for game 6 tomorrow.

Newsome was today's unlikely hitting star for St. Louis (3 hits, 2 runs), and Williams continued to be a holy terror for Boston, with 4 hits raising his average for the series to a mere .619.
