Subject: Cubs @ Braves

Demoralized though we were from having the 1946 season effectively end 2 hours after it began, the Cubs soldiered on.  And the most talented pitching staff in the National League showed its stuff.  CHN starting pitchers in this series: 25 IP, 11 hits, 2 doubles, no triples, no gophers, *NO* (earned) RUNS, 3 walks.  The bullpen.... don't go there.

The Cubs held leads in all 7 games this week, pulled off 2 patented 9th inning chokes, and turned a potential 7-0 record (and an easy 5-2 or 6-1 week for any other team in baseball) into 3-4.  Nobody does it better.

================================================================

Game 2: Hank Wyse, one of last year's numerous poorly-supported Cubbie hurlers, faced off against Boston lefty Eddie Lopat.  Wyse helped himself by singling in the CHN 3rd and scoring on a Phil Cavarretta 1-out triple.  Cavarretta was typically stranded, but newly-acquired Mickey Witek paid his first dividend by getting a decent split card (!) and launching a 2-run homer in the 4th to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

Boston's mediocrities in the field had a spectacular series (81% success on x plays!), while Jim '2' Russell in LF for the Cubs botched an x-play good for 2 bases with non-hitting pitcher Lopat at bat leading off the 6th.  Somehow, Lopat didn't score.

In the 8th, the Cubs struck for 3 runs on 4 hits and turned a tight contest into a deceptively one-sided 6-0 final.  Wyse tossed a 4-hitter and walked nobody, while the CHN batters racked up 13 hits and 20 total bases.

================================================================

Game 3: Claude Passeau vs. Mort Cooper, and the Braves had the better of the play to start with: Tommy Holmes doubled on the very first pitch Passeau lobbed in there, and advanced to third on a flyout.  With 2 outs, figuring that Ray Sanders wouldn't deliver the RBI (he eventually made an out), HAL had Tebbetts commit a passed ball to plate the unearned run.

One frame later, Emil Verban singled leading off for the Braves and was passed balled to second shortly thereafter.  If Tebbetts' rating of '3' means what it is supposed to mean, he committed an ENTIRE SEASON'S worth of passed balls in TWELVE INNINGS of catching.  In any case it's an impressive achievement, and could only happen to a Cub.  Bravo.

The Cubs began to fight back in the fourth when Dom Dallessandro walked and Bill Nicholson tried to double him home.  Having learned from their opening game faux pas, Boston did not cut off the throw.  Split card: 20.

But with 2 on and 2 out, Marty Marion did deliver a single to tie the game at 1, and in the fifth Eddie Waitkus came up with a solo home run.  A very rare miscue by the BON defense assisted us to a third run in the 8th, but we made up for the help by having our second runner of the game gunned at the plate.

Passeau averted a possible big inning by picking off Emil Verban in the 7th; in addition to his stellar performance blocking pitches, Tebbetts was a perfect 2 for 2 today in permitting stolen bases**.  However we averted a big inning of our own with a timely 2-on, 1-out GIDP in the 9th.  But Passeau closed it out with 3 grounders in the bottom of the 9th and won his first career start by the score of 3-1.

** including one by lumbering 1B Ray Sanders, who played 80 games in real life in 1946 and stole NO bases.
