Subject: Cubs @ Cardinals

The Cubs whomp the SLN pitchers, scoring 12, 14 and 12 runs in the three games..... oh wait, those are actually our LOB totals.

Despite nothing resembling a clutch hit and little evidence of the superior Chicago pitching talent, we come one typical patented choke away from a deserved sweep....

Game 1: The Cubs had 4 runs in and were still batting 1.000 against SLN starter Denny Galehouse in the first inning, when we politely shut down the attack and proceeded to come a whisker away from yet another typical patented choke.  Final score: 6-4.

It didn't help that our 13 hits amounted to only 14 total bases, that we out-LOBbed the Cards 12-4, or that we added to our league lead in RGAHP (Runners Gunned At Home Plate).  And it *really* didn't help when St. Louis roared back with the score 5-1 and made it 5-4 thanks to two surgical split cards (split card 1 double, another double, split card 1 gopher) which ended Jesse Flores' day.  But veteran arsonists Tiny Bonham & Emil Kush were effective in relief (!) for a change and held the fort.

=========================================================

Game 2: A mere 14-5 advantage in LOB (and **13** RLISP with 2 outs) was especially costly, as the unluckiest team in the universe ran its 1-run decision record to an impressive 0-5 by choking away 2 leads and then wasting a 3-run comeback.  Final score: 6-5.

The final nail in the coffin came just seconds after we had tied the game with 3 runs in the 8th, when a timely error (split card: 1) on an SB attempt put the losing run at 3B with 0 outs, and -- take note, Cubbie batters -- a clutch hit quickly plated that run.

=========================================================

Game 3: An unearned run immediately erased our 1-0 lead in the first, and we loaded the bases twice in the next two frames with little but timely strikeouts and GIDP to show for it.  SLN starter Charley Schanz was reached for 15 baserunners in 5.1 innings, but only 4 crossed the plate.  That was enough to give us a 4-2 lead however.

Then back-to-back XBH in the St. Louis 8th cut the lead to 1 and put a runner on second with just 1 out.  Bonham came on and retired the next 2 batters, and then earned his first save in heart-attack fashion when he let two weaklings reach base in the bottom of the 9th, again with just 1 out.  But again he somehow managed to get the final 2 outs and -- stop the presses!!! -- the Cubs actually WON a 1-run game (although we had to choke away a 2-run lead to accomplish it).  Final score: 4-3.

Alan
