august 3 Dusty Baker had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the Los Angeles Dodgers topped the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 7 to 5 at Busch Stadium. Steve Howe(6-4) came through for Billy Vanson with an excellent relief stint. He allowed only 1 hit and no walks in 2 innings. The St. Louis bats were silent in the bottom of the 9th. Gaylord Perry(10-8) absorbed the loss. Los Angeles scored big getting 6 runs off him in 3 and 2/3 innings. St. Louis erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 4 hits. Ken Oberkfell led off the inning for St. Louis when he tripled. Cesar Cedeno got his chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Dave Stapleton then doubled scoring a run. George Hendrick was the next batter, but he struck out. Bob Watson stepped into the box and laced a single. McBride kept the rally going and slapped a single resulting in an exciting win for St. Louis and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. St. Louis managed 8 in their victory. Dick Tidrow(8-2) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the victory. Steve Howe(6-5) ended up with the loss in relief. The St. Louis ballclub's record now stands at 65-51.
