Game 1 Rick Miller had 2 base hits at Three Rivers Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 to 3.
Montreal jumped on top of Pittsburgh in the 5th inning scoring a single run using 2 hits. Woodie Fryman pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 29th save.
David Palmer (5-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 3 runs. Don Robinson (9-6) was charged with the loss. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 5 walks.
Game 2 First baseman Jason Thompson had 2 base hits and Ed Whitson had a strong outing at Three Rivers Stadium as the potent Montreal Expos beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2 to 1.
Montreal jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they scored 2 runs on 3 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Whitson (14-2) and Montreal . That was all the run support Whitson required. The pitchers took over after the 2nd inning as neither team was able to score again.
Woodie Fryman earned the save, his 30th. Bob Walk (5-11) suffered the loss. He allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.
Game 3 In a dramatic ending the incredible Montreal Expos staged a comeback and held on to win over the reeling Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 3 to 1.
Montreal had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. Andre Dawson led off and started the attack as he drew a walk. Jason Thompson next to the plate and he doubled knocking in a run. Mike Schmidt then drew a walk. Schmidt swiped second base. Luis Aguayo came to the plate and tripled which was good for two more runs. Despite losing, Pittsburgh out-hit Montreal 9 to 5.
The victory went to Mike Proly (2-3) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Elias Sosa gained credit for his 3rd save. Eddie Solomon (4-7) took the loss.
'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Thompson said. 'If you just keep trying good things can happen!'
Game 4 Gary Carter touched them all and had 3 RBI at Three Rivers Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the floundering Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 4 to 3.
Montreal delivered all the runs required in the 6th inning as they scored 4 runs on 3 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Carter who quieted the crowd when he lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 21st of the season). Montreal managed only 5 on the afternoon.
The winning pitcher was Steve Rogers (19-5) who allowed 1 run in 5 innings. Rogers was helped out by Woodie Fryman who recorded his 31st save. The losing pitcher was Rick Rhoden (0-2).
