Subject: Cubs @ Cardinals

The unluckiest team in the universe retains that distinction for another week, winning the opener and then losing 3 that we should have won.  The Cubs played Strand-O-Matic at the worst possible times (i.e., always), and CHN pitchers watched helplessly as our opponent drew one fantastic split card after another.  After getting a rare taste of what it's like to WIN a close game (by choking away a bigger lead) we resume our regularly-scheduled programming....

Game 1: Some teams pick up free agents and they produce splendidly, but in the case of Chicago pitcher Freddy Martin he has now used up all 3 of his starts with a record of 0-1 to show for it.  A pitcher who walked 7 and fanned *27* in 24 innings of work would have had a lot more to show for it had some other team acquired him.

Today he was all set to record win #1 and had a 2-1 lead in the 7th when an error by fellow scrap-heap pickup Mike Guerra unnerved Martin and opened the floodgates as the next batter doubled home the tying run, and former ace arsonist Emil Kush did what he does best -- allowed hits to the first 2 batters he faced.

But Phil Cavarretta solo-homered, Guerra atoned for his error with a 1-out triple in the 9th (stranded, natch), current ace arsonist Tiny Bonham had a good day by allowing a batting average of only .400 in the bottom of the 9th, but no runs.  Cubs eke out a rare 1-run win that was almost (but not quite) a come-from behind effort!  Final score: 3-2.

================================================

Game 2: This one went 16 innings, mainly because the Cubs averaged exactly 1 LOB per inning and also had a commanding lead in the important 'RLISP 2-Out category' (11-5).  Since these are the Cubs, you should be able to guess the outcome.  That's right, yet another 1-run loss.  Final score: 2-1 in 16.

Five Cubbie hurlers walked NOBODY all day long, while 5 St. Louis pitchers combined for 16 critical strikeouts, most of them undoubtedly coming with less than 2 outs and runners in scoring position.

A first-inning single put us on top 1-0 and concluded our output (other than LOB) for the next 15 frames.  A successful squeeze play in the 6th tied the game and the choke was completed 10 innings later when, moments after yet another RISP LOB by the Cubs, HAL decided that the Cards were unlikely to *hit* their way to a win, so he had the Cubs commit TWO errors to open the 16th inning, and that was immediately followed by the game-losing split card single.

================================================

Game 3: The contest was scoreless through 3, the Cubs put 3 on the board in the 5th and starter Frank Papish had a no-hitter going.  Not for long.  One hit and a pair of free passes loaded the bases for St. Louis in their half of the 4th and a 2-out (what else?) double cleared the bases and tied the game just that quick.

We choked away our second lead of the day in the 7th and reliever Johnny Schmitz was surgically dismembered in the 8th to drive the last coffin nail home.  Final score: 6-4.  The Cubs outhit the Cards 10-8 and also drew more walks, but we LOBbed whenever possible (when not hitting into timely DPs) and dropped another close one.

================================================

Game 4: Sticking with the pattern that's worked so well for us for decades, we out-LOBbed St. Louis 10-5 (would have been 11-5 but for another GIDP), outhit them 10-8 again, choked away a 3-run lead again, and lost a close one again.  Final score: 5-3.

Moments after getting that 3-0 lead, an attack of surgical split cards erased it entirely and another one sealed the outcome 2 innings later.

Alan
