The Chicago White Sox take their Monetarist-Ball squad to Detroit to see if they can abort the Tigers' stretch run before it gets going. Game 1: Gary Peters takes his 14-game winning streak against Luis Tiant. The Tigers pounce to an early lead. The ChiSox scuffle back to tie the game and bring on a battle of the bullpens. Gloom descends on the Chicago bench as Bob Locker coughs up 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th. The frowns are turned upside down as Johnny Romano comes through with his second home run of the night - a grand slam - to pull the White Sox to a 8-7 win. Chicago AL had the winning rally in the 9th inning when they tallied 4 runs on 3 hits. The highlight belonged to Romano who helped quiet the crowd when he launched a Grand Slam homerun (his 18th of the season). Chicago AL totaled 10 on the night. Bob Locker(4-3) allowed 3 runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Hoyt Wilhelm got the save, his 26th. Hal Woodeshick(2-1) absorbed the loss in relief. Chicago AL's manager was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there? You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over 'til its over.' Game 2: The Tigers again jump out to an early lead against one of Chicago's aces. Again, the Sox chip away to tie the game - then take the lead in the 8th. Yet again, the Tigers strike against the vaunted Sox bullpen - O'Donoghue and Wilhelm this time. But Ken Berry comes through in the 12th with his second clutch hit of the game - a 2-run homer that provided the decisive blow in the 8-6 win. Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Chicago AL was victorious in the 12th inning. Joe Morgan led off and he banged out a single. After another out, Locker was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Berry then cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 9th of the season). Detroit could do no damage in the bottom of the 12th. Locker(5-3) got the win allowing no runs in 3 innings. Johnny Podres(5-5) was hit with the loss in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 2 hits in 2 innings. Game 3: With complete disaster staring them in the face, the Tigers' pitching staff comes through to keep their fading hopes on life support. Hank Aguirre and Hal Woodeshick ( who doesn't blow the game this time) scatter 6 hits and make the single run Detroit was able to score against Tommy John stand up. Detroit set the tone of the game in the first inning scoring a single run using 2 hits. That was all Aguirre needed. Chicago AL made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Aguirre got relief help from Hal Woodeshick who gained credit for his 11th save. Chicago AL's manager was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more white hairs on this noggin of mine.' |
