august 8 The Minnesota Twins defeated the New York AL Yankees by a score of 5 to 2 at Metropolitan Stadium. Jim Kaat(12-7) gave a fine effort for Minnesota. He was reached for 9 hits and no walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. New York AL made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Mel Stottlemyre(9-12) suffered the loss. He pitched 6 innings giving up 6 hits and 2 walks. Whitaker was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He tripled scoring a run in the 1st inning, tripled plating two runs in the 5th inning and hit a single in the 7th inning. New York AL lit up the scoreboard in the 7th inning when they had 4 runs on 5 hits. New York AL dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings. Sam McDowell(7-7) got the win allowing 6 runs in 7 innings. Mudcat Grant(10-12) was the losing pitcher. He allowed New York AL 9 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings of work.
