august 15

Bob Welch(12-6) and Tommy Boggs(5-12) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with
Welch and the Los Angeles Dodgers coming out on top of the New York NL Mets 2
to 1.

Los Angeles tallied 2 runs in the top of the 2nd inning.  That early scoring
held up.  Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.

Steve Howe recorded his 29th save.  'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take
the win' Welch said.

Steve Carlton tossed a complete game as the New York NL Mets beat the Los
Angeles Dodgers by a score of 2 to 1.

New York NL came up with 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning.  The key
offensive moment was provided by Joel Youngblood who came through for the
home fans when he cracked a two-run shot (his 4th of the season).  Neither
team managed to score after the 4th inning.

Carlton(13-10) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. The losing
pitcher was Don Sutton(13-9).  New York NL now has a record of 61-71.  Los

AUGUST 17

40,725 fans were treated to a fine game at Shea Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The New York NL Mets won by the
slimmest of margins, 7 to 6.

Jeff Reardon(8-8) got the win with a steady relief outing.  He was reached for
2 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings.  A wild affair, this game saw the lead change
5 times.

Bobby Castillo(3-3) was the loser in relief.  He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings
giving up 4 hits and no walks.
