Subject: Cubs @ Braves

The Cubs faced the well-into-last-place Braves in a series that couldn't have more clearly illustrated the relative value of talent vs. luck.  As usual, "talent", when it belongs to the Cubs, doesn't stand a chance....

Game 1: BON's Johnny Sain held the Cubbie offense to just 4 hits, and we erased 2 of those with immediate DPs.  Boston broke on top when, of course, they found a fortuitous split card on a HR 1-3, flyout 4-20 and things went downhill from there.  Final score: 5-0.

CHN starter Hank Wyse was torched for 11 hits in 7 IP by the bottom-ranked offense in the N.L., and the bullpen followed up by allowing more hits (4) than outs recorded (3), including a "one batter faced, one surgical split card gopher allowed" performance by Cubs' super-arsonist Emil Kush.

================================================

Game 2: Surely it couldn't get any worse, right?  How naive of anyone to think so.

BON's Eddie Lopat held the Cubbie offense to just 2 hits, and we erased 1 of those (even though it was a double so we had to do it the hard way) with a DP.

Paul Erickson and Tiny Bonham put zeroes on the board against the Braves in 7 of the 8 frames and combined on a 3-hitter -- and naturally lost, in large part because we committed as many errors as we got hits, one of those being a timely 2-out, 2-unearned-run howler by one of our good fielders.  But the one earned run we allowed in that same frame would have been enough to lose anyway.  Final score: 3-0.

================================================

Game 3: A more blatant example of split cards entirely favoring one team over another (the Cubs) might not be soon in coming.  At least not until this time next week.  An inability to succeed on even a 1-19 split chance, as just one of many similar events, led the Cubs to our major-league leading 11th one-run loss.

At least we finally got some hits today (11) against the 6th-ranked pitching staff in the N.L., but turned them into double-digit LOB despite three more GIDPs detracting from the LOB total.  The Cubs tied the game in the 9th with a pair of singles to open the frame -- and then of course one of our well-timed DPs -- but a third single delivered a run.

And the patented Cubs choke promptly followed, via 3 straight singles in the bottom of the 9th after there were 2 outs and nobody on base.  Final score: 3-2.  Had we been able to get that final out in the 9th, we could have lost in extras and run our luckless record to 1-7 in those games.

For the second straight day no Chicago batter struck out, a feat which had no impact on the contest whatsoever although a few K's would surely have been preferable to all the DPs.

================================================

Game 4: Narrowly averting being swept by the 7th best team in the league, CHN's Jesse Flores was given a whopping 1 run of support today -- and somehow made it stand up.  Final score: 1-0.  Bert Haas opened the top of the first with a home run (it even involved a split card!) and the scoreboard operator then took the rest of the day off.

Flores scattered 5 singles in 8 innings and Bonham actually got the job done in the 9th when it mattered for a change.

Alan
