Subject: Cubs @ Browns
The Cubs take 2 of 3 at St. Louis. It would have been a sweep, but the last game was decided by one run and you know what that means whenever the Cubs are involved.... Game 1: The Cubs built an 8-0 lead for converted super-arsonist Emil Kush, now being tried as a starter. Kush pitched well for 4 innings but walked the bases loaded and then delivered the (of course) 2-out hit that launched the major comeback attempt. It almost worked, but not quite. Final score: 8-5. Fourth-string OF Dominic Dallessandro had a day like no other Cubs player's ever had -- or ever will again -- and we needed every bit of his help. He opened the game with a Si 1, lo 2-20 -- and got the 1! Naturally he didn't score or even advance, but still.... Then with 2 men on base in the CHN second, he rolled a HR 1, fb(B) 2-20 -- and got the 1 again!!! Those three runs were initially just insignificant components of an 8-run lead, but they sure became important later. ================================================== Game 2: The Cubs struck for 3 quick runs against Bob Feller, choked most of that lead away, but rebounded to win by the score of 5-3. Mediocre CHN starter Hank Wyse had a mediocre start (6.1 IP, 8 hits, 3 runs, 1 unearned, no walks) and Unhittable Paul Erickson, though wild, went the rest of the way for the save. Today's offense was mainly provided by Andy Pafko, who tripled, homered and drove in 3 runs. ================================================== Game 3: DPs (or the lack thereof) along with typical horrendous clutch performance by the Cubs determined today's outcome. We would rack up 11 critical LOB (7 in scoring position) despite hitting into 2 rally-killing DPs. It started in the first inning when we had a run in and the bases loaded with 1 out. A perfectly-timed DP took care of that threat. In the bottom of that same inning, St. Louis had a man on first and 1 out. The hitter rolled a column chock full of gb(A)'s. He found an alternative way of making the second out and therefore, having avoided the all-but-certain DP, the 2-out rally was on and the contest was quickly tied. A gopher on a split card of 1 (HAL's revenge for Dallessandro; no break goes unpunished around here) put us down by a run in the late innings. In fitting fashion, a DP the Cubs *didn't* hit into proved fatal in the 9th inning. Stan Hack opened that frame with a base on balls and pitcher Murry Dickson -- a better hitter than most of our bench -- was left in to bat and came through with a single that sent Hack to third. When a gb(A) -- you know, those things we are so good at when we don't want one -- would have plated the tying run, what do we get? That's right, a deadly gb(B) that nailed the runner at the plate. With another runner at third and still just 1 out, the Clutch Chokers that are the Cubbies inevitably failed to deliver. Final score: 2-1. Alan |
