Subject: Reds at Padres
San Diego makes their SMILEY debut by dropping 3 of 4 to Cincinnati. The Reds outhit the Padres .288 to .177 in the series, but the scores were a lot closer than the batting averages would indicate. Game 1: Bobby Tolan and Alex Johnson each nailed a 2-run homer in Cincy's 4-run sixth inning. That was all the scoring for the Reds, and all they'd need. San Diego fought back, making the final score 4-3. Fred Talbot got the victory in his Cincy debut, and Jack Billingham went 3 innings for his first save, while Jim Merritt lasted six innings in the Padre loss. Game 2: Don Wilson and Clay Kirby matched goose eggs through five innings, when the Reds scratched out a run in the sixth, and the Padres responded with two of their own on RBIs by Nate Colbert and Jose Tartabull. Cincy scored in the ninth, but that was just enough to wind up losing by the score of 3-2. Tommie Sisk got the relief win, and Jack Baldschun his first save. Wilson walked none and struck out 11 while seeing his 1969 record drop to 0-2 despite an ERA well below 3.00. Game 3: Another game reminiscent of 1968 as both teams remained scoreless into extra innings. Jim McGlothlin (still 0-0 in 2 starts but with a 0.66 ERA) threw 8 shutout innings, and Clay Carroll got the win for Cincy in the 11th. Particularly impressive was Padre starter Dick Kelley: 10.1 IP, 7 hits, 1 walk, 10 K's and no runs. After Tony Perez struck out leading off the Reds 11th inning, HAL inexplicably decided to bring in Jack Baldschun (perhaps Kelley was on a 160 pitch limit?). An out later, Lee May and Tommy Helms reached base, and were delivered home on a clutch hit (!) by Woody Woodward. San Diego got two runners on in the bottom of the inning, but Nate Colbert rapped into a DP to end the game, as the Cincinnati bullpen was frantically warming. Game 4: An easy one for the Reds, as Jim Maloney (2-0, 0.53 ERA) throttled the San Diego bats. The N.L. is now hitting .077 vs. Maloney (4 hits in 17 IP), while he is batting .429 with a home run. Cincinnati beat up Joe Niekro and Tommie Sisk for 13 hits in the 7-0 win. Pete Rose tripled and homered, and Lee May & Johnny Bench also went deep. Alan |
