One of our better efforts: the Cubs attempt 3 chokes in Cincinnati, succeed only once! We LOBbed as many as we could, when not hitting into countless DPs, but recovered after a disgusting (but ever so typical) game 1 choke to narrowly win the final 2 contests.... Game 1: CHN starter Hank Wyse blew most of his 3-0 lead when he coughed up a triple & 3 singles in the CIN 4th and finished the job when he was gophered by Grady Hatton in the bottom of the 7th. Wyse left immediately and was replaced by Perfect Paul Erickson (who would be a Cy Young winner on a team just a tad less luckless than the Cubs) and he held the fort (2.1 IP, 1 baserunner, 0 runs) but since he was scheduled to start the series finale his time on the mound had to be limited. There's no better way to ensure a successful choke than to bring super-arsonist Emil Kush into the game, and that's precisely what happened in the 10th: single, gopher, ballgame. Cubs choke, 5-3 in 10, LOBbing 12 and still finding time to hit into three critical DPs so as to blow a 3-run lead and avoid winning in regulation. ================================================== Game 2: The split cards were favoring our opponent as usual by a ratio of about 50 to 1 and therefore Frank Papish quickly found himself on the wrong end of a 3-1 score. Finally in the CHN 5th, HAL was temporarily distracted and removed his boot from our throats just long enough (despite 2 more adverse splits) for us to plate 4 runs when Marty Marion came through with a bases-loaded double after Andy Pafko was IW'd to get to Marion. Erratic play by the Reds (walk, wild pitch, error, walk) gave the Cubs 2 insurance runs in the 8th before another one of our well-timed GIDP's aborted that rally. Feeling charitable, we had the hilarious Kush donate those 2 runs right back to the Reds. Jess Flores restored order and retired 4 of the 5 batters he faced, and preserved the almost-choked-away 7-5 victory. Frank McCormick homered twice for the Reds, giving him 3 for the series (27% of his season total of 11 in the space of 4 at bats). ================================================== Game 3: Perfect P. Erickson was thankfully in typical form, tossing 6 effective shutout innings before yielding to a typically ineffective bullpen performance though the contest was too close for the Kush Fireworks Show to appear today. In the first 3 frames, CHN batters came to plate with 2 outs and 7 men on base, plated zero. At last, Jim Russell delivered 3 RBI in 2 innings and gave Erickson a 4-0 lead, and he left with that lead intact. Murry Dickson, the third man to be given a chance at the closer's role in Chicago in 1946, and the first man not to choke in that role 90% of the time, was hardly at his best today. He allowed 2 hits opening the CIN 8th and saw to it that both scored despite allowing no further hits, then sealed up the win with only minor difficulty in the 9th. Final score: 4-2.
