Subject: Cubs @ Reds, game 1
A season-series which, if the Cubs had received anything remotely approaching our fair share of breaks in 1946, would have been important to both teams but instead has meaning to only one. In the opener of the 4-game visit to Crosley Field Perfect-No-Longer Paul Erickson faced off against Nate Andrews. The contest started impossibly well for the Cubs, as leadoff hitter Eddie Waitkus achieved a rather tough ballpark home run with what was probably our first (and surely our last) '1' split card of the season. Phil Cavarretta followed with an almost as good split card triple -- and wasn't stranded! However we did return to normal two batters later by drawing our favorite split card (20) in the entire deck. Erickson wasted about 5 seconds before giving both of those runs back, as his worst outing of the season quickly got underway. Grady Hatton kept the bottom of the first alive with a surgical split card 2-out bases-empty double, and Pat Seerey rolled in his 1 column and, seeing as the Cubs were the opponent, was hardly about to miss rolling a home run. Tie game. It got worse for Erickson moments later when the formerly most unhittable pitcher in the majors gave up 3 more hits in the CIN 2nd and now trailed 4-2. Amazingly, the Cubs bounced right back -- Cavarretta's second triple of the game was followed by a very rare home run from powerful (but massively underachieving) cleanup hitter Bill Nicholson, his whopping 9th of the season after 16 weeks. Tie game again. As so often happens, we were victimized by another rally when just one more out in the inning would have squelched it. This time, in the CIN 3rd, Erickson issued a 2-out walk to load the bases, then 4 pitches later another 2-out walk gave the Reds an effortless lead. That was the ballgame, since the Cubs would not bounce back again, but HAL couldn't let the 1946 season come to an end without surgically dismembering the Cubs at least once more. Although Tiny Bonham kept Cincy off the board for a couple of frames, comic reliever Emil Kush's sadly typical outing (single, walk, gopher, shower; 0 outs recorded, 3 runs in) opened the floodgates for 9 runs that were delivered via some of the most incredible surgical precision possible. Final score: 14-4. .220 hitter Seerey drove in 5 with a pair of gophers; sub-.250 OF Dain Clay went 4 for 4 from the #8 hole as HAL saw to it that all Reds batters had a field day. Alan |
