Subject: Detroit @ Chicago (AL) G2

This was one of the most fun game I've played in SOM...  at least vs. HAL.  This one lasted until late into the night last evening.

Detroit appeared to be on its way to a standard winning formula.  That would be score some runs early and lean on starter Hal Newhouser (27-5).  After Johnny Lindell hit a 2-run HR in the 4th to tie the game, 2-2, the Tigers immediately went out in the 5th and scored 3 times via a Newhouser leadoff single, Fleming reached on an error by Buddy Blattner, and then George Kell's run-scoring single was follwed by Dick Wakefield's RBI double and Hank Greenberg's sac fly.

With a 5-2 lead, Newhouser was unable to settle in.  Maybe it was due to the 314 innings (and 19 complete games) he had compiled coming into this contest.  Regardless, five of the first 6 batters singled in the 5th, and the game was once again tied, 5-5. In the 6th, Chicago completed the mission to remove Newhouser (5 1/3 11 9 9 3 6) from the game.  Newhouser departed the game behind 7-5 with runners at 1st and 2nd.  Reliever Johnny Gorsica immediately allowed an RBI single to Johnny Lindell and a sac fly to Blattner, and the White Sox appeared to have an insurmountable 9-5 advantage with 9 outs remaining.

In the 7th, Detroit chipped away at the 4-run deficit on Kell's leadoff double and Wakefield's 2-run homer.  Suddenly it was 9-7 in favor of the Sox.  The 8th inning was uneventful for Detroit while Chicago received leadoff singles from Stan Rojek and Joe Kuhel before Tiger relievers Johnny Murphy and Charlie Gassaway escaped from that threat.

That moved the contest to the 9th.  In this frame, Chicago's Johnny Humphries was attempting to pitch his 3rd scoreless inning to preserve the save.  He had not yet allowed a baserunner among the first 6 batters he faced.  In the 9th he struck out the leadoff man Fleming before walking Kell.  The righty shook off the walk by retiring Wakefield on a flyball to center.  With 2 outs in the 9th and Detroit's season on the line, a 3-9 BP homer (1-13) was rolled.  Greenberg must have had plenty of wood because the 9-split was pulled and Greenberg had his biggest blast of the season (#37) to tie the game, 9-9.  Hoot Evers struck out to end the threat and Detroit's Sid Hudson retired 3 of the 4 White Sox hitters in the 9th to send the game to extra frames.

In the 10th, Detroit rallied again and when Fleming was hit by an Eddie Smith pitch with 2 outs, the Tigers had loaded the bases. Smith did not roll over as he got Kell on a groundball to end the frame.  Detroit brought in usual starting pitcher Fred Hutchinson and he retired 3 of 4 batters in the bottom of the inning to keep the White Sox off the board.

The 11th inning proved uneventful as Smith retired 3 of the four batters in his 2nd inning of work.  However, in the bottom of the 11th, Thurman Tucker doubled to lead off.  Taffy Wright then lofted a flyball to leftfield for the first out and Guy Curtright hit a slow grounder to short that pushed Tucker to third base.  The Tigers elected to walk both Al Lopez and Luke Appling to load the bases with 2 outs.  The strategy paid off as Hutchinson retired Leo Wells on a flyball to leftfielder Roy Cullenbine.

In the 12th Tiger second baseman Don Kolloway singled off new relief pitcher Pete Center (who was making his 1st appearance this season) and advanced to 2nd on an error by White Sox 3B Wells.  Late Tiger roster addition Gus Niarhos doubled home Kolloway to put Detroit in front for the first time since the 5th inning, 10-9.   After the next two batters were retired, Niarhos came home to score when Appling committed his 2nd misplay on a grounder to short.

Detroit sent Hutchinson out for his 3rd inning to preserve the 11-9 lead, and he proved worthy of that trust with.a 1-2-3 inning to finish a truly wild game.

Chicago out-hit Detroit, 17-14, and out-LOB'bed the Tigers, 14-10.  Stan Rojek led Chicago with 3 hits while Kell had 3 hits (and 3 runs and 3 RBI) for the Tigers.

Final Score: Detroit 11, Chicago 9
WP- Hutchinson 13-8, LP- Center 0-1
HR- Lindell (16), Wakefield (21), Greenberg (37)

The AL is now tied in the win column with Detroit having 1 game remaining in the Windy City.
