Thanks for the report. Congratulations to a very good Tiger team.
Any disappointment I may have for the 1946 Red Sox still does not exceed my
1980 Expo's.

Following their season-ending series in Detroit, the Red Sox stayed in town
an extra day for the playoff matchup that featured the same two starting
pitchers who worked just 2 days earlier (3, when you count the day of rest
that was given).
Unfortunately for the Sox, the end result was the same albeit not quite so
lopsided. Congrats to the Detroit Tigers, who won game 155 by the score of
4-2.

The man who provided all of the Boston offense today began doing so
immediately -- Dominic Dimaggio's home run on Hal Newhouser's third pitch
of the game gave the visitors a quick 1-0 lead. In the DEA second however,
hits by Aaron Robinson and Doc Cramer off of Boston starter Tex Hughson put
2 RISP with one out. Eddie Mayo stroked Hughson's next pitch up the middle
and the Tigers had a 2-1 lead.
Dimaggio opened the Boston 3rd with a single but was erased on a 6-4-3 DP
despite running with the pitch. The next two Boston batters reached base,
but a good fielding play by Newhouser robbed Bobby Doerr of a possible hit
and the side was retired.
But Dimaggio struck again in the 5th, tying the game by launching his 8th
home run of the season on the same uncommon dice roll (1-2) he'd used to
open the contest.
The season was decided in the Detroit 6th when Hughson apparently began to
fade. He allowed a pair of hits off his own card to open the frame, then
uncorked a run-scoring wild pitch with Hank Greenberg at the plate.
Greenberg's flyout was too short for Dick Wakefield to tag up and score,
but Robinson's wasn't and the Tigers had a 4-2 lead.
Boston got a pair of runners aboard in the 7th but Ted Williams, batting
with 2 outs, needed a very surgical split card to deliver a double that
might have tied the game, but he didn't get it and Newhouser set down the
Sox in order in the 8th and 9th to seal up his 28th win of 1946 and send
the Tigers to their first pennant in a decade. Final score: 4-2.
Detroit advances to the World Series to meet the Dodgers, while the Red Sox
become only the second team in Pre-Smiley history to win 100+ games yet not
make the postseason (the other was the 1963 Dodgers) a feat accomplished no
less than THREE times in Smiley by -- who else could it possibly be? -- the
Cincinnati Reds.
