Subject: Reds @ Giants

When the Reds come to town, the balls (usually) fly around....

The new-look, sometimes-we-do-actually-get-a-break Reds take 2 of 3 in
Candlestick. Cincy drew a total of 1 walk in the series - a trait carried
over from 1968 - but (probably thanks to all the CS and runners thrown out
on the bases) we don't seem to be rapping into as many DP's.

Game 1: Willie McCovey smacked a 3-run, first-inning, pitcher's-card homer
off Don Wilson, which was all San Fran got and all they needed in a 3-2
victory. Wilson drops to 0-3 despite a decent 3.15 ERA. Tony Perez
answered five innings later with a two-run shot of his own to complete the
scoring for the day.

Ray Sadecki (1-0) went 5 strong innings for the win, and ex-Red Ted
Abernathy notched save #1 of 1969 in a rare low-scoring contest. Cincy had
2 runners caught stealing (now 0 for 5 in '69) and another gunned down on
the bases.

Game 2: It's the Pete Rose show, as Mr. Hustle goes 5 for 5 with a homer and
4 runs scored. Bobby Tolan also homered in the 5-2 Cincinnati victory, and
the Reds hurlers managed to keep the Giants in the park for once. Tony
Cloninger (1 ER in 6 IP) surprisingly got the win in his first appearance of
1969, and Gary Nolan earned a 3-inning save in his first action of the year.
Gaylord Perry threw a complete-game 11-hitter for the home team.

Game 3: This may be the prototypical Reds game in 1969: Up 5-0 after 4
innings, the Reds choke their way back to a close contest when Willie
McCovey caps a 4-run Giant sixth with a 3-run shot. Johnny Bench replied
with a solo blast in the seventh, making the score 6-4, but the Giants were
able to knot the score in the eighth on a 2-out HBP to Ron Hunt (naturally)
followed by a Bobby Bonds homer.

Cincinnati won it in the tenth after 2 outs: pitcher Jack Billingham
innocently singled and Hero Bobby Bonds became Goat Bobby Bonds when he
misplayed Pete Rose's liner into a 2-base error, sending Billingham to
third. With Alex Johnson at the plate, a rattled Ted Abernathy uncorked two
wild throws (one was scored as a passed ball), plating both runners.

Willie Mays homered in the bottom of the inning off of a shaky Clay Carroll,
but Carroll retired Willie McCovey on a flyout to end the drama. The Reds
almost always found ways to lose games like this in 1969, but even victories
of this nature can be tough on the manager (still, we'll take them).

Starters Jim McGlothlin and Juan Marichal were long gone by the time things
were decided. Marichal was uncharacteristically hittable, allowing 13 of
them before he was pulled.

Alan
