Subject: Opening Day report from Ebbets Field

It's a new season, and some things have changed: after nearly 15 years with talent rarely exceeding the level of "mediocre", the 1945 Cubs (echoing their real-life counterparts) have the most talent in the National League, and it's not even close, featuring the #1 hitting and #1 pitching in the circuit.

It's a new season, and some things never change: very little of that talent was on display in the season opener aside from some adequate pitching, but our eternal rotten, bottom-of-the-barrel luck sure was....

================================================================================

The starting pitchers who got the honor of making the first pitches of the season were Claude Passeau for Chicago and Hal Gregg for Brooklyn.  Phil Cavarretta lined Gregg's second pitch of the contest up the middle for a single, but the rally was stillborn when we got a couple of typical Cubbie split cards (17, 19) that turned hits into outs.

With one out in the BRN half of the first, Floyd Baker singled and Augie Galan followed with an x-play grounder to Gold Glove shortstop Marty Marion.  That's a DP, inning over.

Nope.

That's an error, a 2-base choke so as to provide maximum damage, in order that the next batter -- who of course came up with a hit -- could drive in 2 runs instead of 1 or none.

One inning of 1945 is in the books, and that's the ballgame, not to mention a pretty good indicator of how the season's inevitably going to go.

The Dodgers would score no more today, but because the #1 offense in the league was busy racking up 10 LOB and still finding time to hit into THREE timely rally-killing DPs, the Dodgers would not need to score again.

Chicago registered our lone run in the 8th when Andy Pafko singled Cavarretta home from third with 1 out; one of Brooklyn's three errors followed and put runners on 2nd & 3rd with still just one out.  When a mere sac fly would have been helpful, our clutch chokers, already in midseason form, couldn't even manage that.  The three errors the Dodgers donated resulted in, naturally, zero unearned runs.

CHN batters came to the plate 8 times today with runners in scoring position; Pafko's RBI was the one and only hit, wasting a decent start from Passeau and 2 scoreless relief innings from newcomer Hy Vandenberg, and settling for the first of many unearned, undeserved losses to come in the 1945 season.  Final score: 2-1.

The teams got 6 hits apiece, not one of them for more than one base.  CHN batters did fairly well (for us) on the split cards, getting an average of a mere 16.0.

Alan
