Subject: Cubs @ Dodgers, game 2 & 3

The Cubs ended our period of mourning for the late President and amazingly rebounded to take the final two games with the back end of our rotation on the hill, thus escaping the early-season cellar....

Game 2: Chicago banged out 20 total bases to Brooklyn's 9, but as usual CHN batters approached home plate with both hands clasped firmly around their throats whenever there was a chance that a run might score.  The Cubs went on to a whopping 10-2 rout in our favorite category: 'RLISP 2-out'.

Today's outcome came down to the Dodgers simply providing so much charity -- 4 errors, SEVEN unearned runs -- faster than we could refuse to accept it.  Though we conclusively outhit and outpitched the home team, the Cubs scored only 3 earned runs, which were exactly as many as we allowed.  Final score: 10-3.

Rookie Paul Derringer made his debut after his mates had exploded for 4 runs on 4 hits in the top of the first.  Derringer took the opportunity to disintegrate immediately, giving 3 of those runs back.  So the Cubs plated 3 more right away to make the score 7-3 and Derringer finally relaxed, putting up nothing but zeroes over the final 8 frames and recording an 8-hitter (7 singles, 1 double) with just 2 free passes.

=========================================================================

Game 3: After a day of offense it was back to the tightly-pitched tension of the opener as the CHN LOB machine was in high gear (another lovely 1 for 7 performance with RISP).

Starter Tiny Bonham, last year's bullpen arsonist now moved into the rotation, didn't permit the Dodgers to even GET a runner into scoring position until a leadoff double in the BRN 6th.  He was bunted to third and (the infield snuck in when the manager wasn't looking) -- somehow was nailed at the plate on a gb(B)!

Good thing too, because the offense was doing not a blessed thing with Brooklyn's Marino Pieretti and the contest remained scoreless through 7 innings.

Cavarretta doubled with 1 out in the 8th and Pieretti loaded them up with an HBP and a walk before leaving in favor of Tom Seats.  Bases loaded, 1 out, Cubs batting.... this looks like another scoreless frame.

And it would have been: sure enough a couple of outs did quickly follow, but not before Chuck Workman came through with a 2-run single!

Good thing too, because Cub pitchers simply can't stand prosperity and Bonham, a la Derringer yesterday, fell right apart.  His first 2 pitches of the bottom of the 8th went for hits and Tiny went for a shower.

On came new Cubbie closer (uh oh) Sal Maglie for his inevitably arsonistic debut.  Maglie didn't disappoint, walking the bases loaded with still nobody out.  But Cavarretta picked up an x-grounder and astonishingly turned it into a 3-6-3 DP as a run crossed the plate.

Chicago got an insurance run in the 9th, aided by yet another Dodger error.  With the unearned runner on first, Maglie was left in to bat and promptly swatted a double on which Jim Russell just barely beat the split card throw to the plate.  It's a new trait for one of our arsonists to at least be able to hit, or do anything positive on the field.

Maglie had another poor inning in the bottom of the 9th, but fortunately the walk and double he gave up had a GIDP in between.  Final score: 3-1.  Pieretti and two BRN relievers held the Cubs to 5 hits but we also got 5 walks, an HBP and 1 helpful error.  Bonham & Maglie combined on a 6-hitter with 2 walks, both by the reliever.

Alan
