Subject: Cubs @ Braves
The two top offenses in the N.L. met in Boston, and not even our congenital inability to draw a good split card (with one nice exception) nor our congenital inability to suppress the late-inning gag reflex could stop the Cubs.... Game 1: The Cubs built a 7-1 lead for Paul Derringer through 5, then of course stopped hitting entirely, and Derringer went off the rails in the 8th when a surgical split card double plated 2 runs instead of being the final out. Then in the 9th, Perfect Paul Erickson -- the lone Cub who wasn't happy to see 1946 end -- showed that this is indeed a new year by getting surgically dismembered for 4 straight hits before being replaced by new closer Sal Maglie, who predictably was also greeted with a hit instead of recording the final out. But, breaking with long-standing Cubbie tradition, he did eventually get that out instead of completing the choke. The 7-1 lead turned into a 7-6 final. Even though our batters got damn near zero good split cards, we did get one today -- on defense, gunning a runner in the 9th to preserve the barely-aborted choke. Boston outhit the Cubs 16-13 and even narrowly out-LOBbed us, 10-9, as Chicago basically stopped playing after 5 innings and nearly paid our typically heavy price. ======================================================= Game 2: In nearly a repeat performance, the Cubs were up 6-0 in the 5th, shut down the offense and went for the choke yet again. But again, didn't quite succeed. Final score: 7-4. Al Lakeman got our one good split card of the series at a most propitious time, delivering a Grand Slam in the 5-run 5th. Tiny Bonham came one out away from a complete game despite losing a lot of blood during late-inning surgery, and Maglie came in with the tying run at the plate (after Bonham turned that 6-0 lead into a save situation) and got George Kell to ground out. ======================================================= Game 3: Hank Wyse had a good start last week (0.00 ERA) but entered this week winless. He didn't pitch quite so well today, raising his ERA to 0.56, but a run in the 8th broke a 1-1 tie and earned Wyse a well-deserved win. Final score: 2-1. A Hank Sauer sac fly gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the first, but Boston quickly knotted the score when their first TWO batters of the game each succeeded on a microscopic 1-3 BP single chance and one of them came around to score. Wyse and BON starter Eddie Lopat put up nothing but zeroes for the next 6 frames. In the CHN eighth a leadoff single was erased by a timely GIDP, then Sauer followed with what would have been an RBI double but instead was simply a LOB waiting to happen. But after an IW to Ford Garrison, Marty Marion rolled his second '$' clutch reading of the day (too bad the first wasn't in a clutch situation) and this time a run resulted. Wyse scattered 7 hits, none of them occurring after a leadoff single in the 5th, and the Cubs completed the sweep. Alan |
