Subject: Cubs @ Pirates

These are the Cubs so of course we'll find a way to choke eventually, but if the North Siders keep playing like this we may blow away the rest of the 1945 National League by even more than our talent warrants.  After two narrow wins to open the series against a pretty good Bucco squad, Chicago pitching reasserted itself and easily sealed up the sweep....

Game 1: CHN starter Hank Wyse pitched fairly well (6 IP, 1 run) but was in line for a loss rather than a win because the Cubs hasn't scored at all against Pirate ace "Boom Boom" Beck since HAL had us roll almost exclusively on his card throughout the middle innings (and most of the other innings too).

The Cubs loaded the bases with 1 out in the 7th and then a forceout at the plate made it 2 outs with still no scoring, but Phil Cavarretta came through with a 2-run single -- off his own card -- and that took care of the outcome.  Sal Maglie finished up with 3 innings of scoreless albeit eventful relief.  Final score: 2-1.

Game 2: As a reminder that these ARE still the same old Cubs, we still get routinely outplayed whenever split cards are involved, and the inability to suppress the urge to monster-choke is something all Cubs teams simply must live with.  Today nicely illustrated both points.

Start off by scoring 5 times in 2 innings and then ever so politely terminate the offense entirely.  Not that it should have mattered; a 5-0 lead in the 6th is something from which any other team would coast to victory, especially with their #1 pitcher on the mound.

But the Cubs are hardly "any other team" and the Pirates benefitted from a super-surgical sixth inning which featured hitting for the cycle.  A 2-run triple and a 2-run surgical split card gopher came, naturally, after 2 outs and suddenly the Cubs trailed 7-5.  We got squat in the 7th and 8th but Hank Sauer's pinch-single in the 9th brought us to within a run, and with 2 outs up came Jim Russell, batting well over 100 points below where he should be.

He'd had an interesting game: in the first Russell had a 1-12 shot at a solo home run -- and got it!  One frame later he had the same dice roll/split card chance at what would have been a game-ending (for all intents and purposes) Grand Slam.  And of course missed; then got a *third* shot at those same odds a few innings later and failed yet again.

But with the Cubs down to our last out, Russell at last stopped trying for (and missing) easy home runs and settled for a mere single that plated a pair and resulted in an aborted-choke 8-7 win (!).

Games 3 & 4: Jess Flores & Tiny Bonham both went to 4-0, both tossed complete games and each allowed just 1 run (Bonham's was unearned) and the Cubs kept hitting.  Final scores: 6-1 and 10-1.  The top hitters took the day off in Game 3 as the bottom of the lineup did all the damage, and all 9 CHN players had at least one hit in the finale; pitcher Bonham led the way with 2 hits and 2 runs scored.
