Subject: Reds @ Expos

The late innings worked in favor of the Reds for a change, as 15 of the 21 runs we scored in these four games came in either the 8th or 9th frames.  After a game 1 trouncing, Cincy rebounded to win the final 3, although the victories could hardly be called convincing....

Game 1: This non-contest was over almost before it began; 3 Cincy errors in the first inning resulted in 3 unearned runs and Bill Gullickson took a shutout into the ninth before the Reds put up any struggle whatsoever.  Final score: 6-2.

Game 2: Tom Seaver had a 2-1 lead in the sixth when MON's relief pitcher was allowed to bat in a clutch situation - and of course he delivered the game-tying RBI.  Cincy loaded the bases with zero outs in the seventh but failed to score at all as we hit into the obligatory 6-2-3 rally-killer.  Then our defensive replacement at 1B generously coughed up a run, giving the Expos a 3-2 lead into the ninth.

Jeff Reardon came in with about a 97% chance of nailing the coffin shut, but Bob Bailor led off with a triple and (as we waited patiently to load the bases and then hit into a game-ending DP) Ivan DeJesus took charge, committing a pair of errors which helped the Reds to 4 runs and a very unlikely 6-3 win.

Game 3: Milt Wilcox had a 1-0 lead after six innings (only 1-0 thanks to *2* Gary Carter plate blocks), but Joe Price came in to collect the Blown Save and it was up to the Cardiac Kids to score 3 runs in both the 8th & 9th innings and turn the close game into a 7-2 final.  Alan Bannister's pinch-single in the 8th keyed that rally, and Tim Raines gave George Foster a 2-run triple in the ninth to seal the deal.

Game 4: Frank Pastore had a solid outing, and so the 3 runs we scored in the 9th weren't necessary.  Final score: 6-1.  Von Hayes, subbing at 3B for the bum who literally can't hit his weight, had 3 hits including a triple.  Newly-(re)acquired 1B Harry Spilman also contributed to the offense with a couple of hits.
