Subject: Cubs @ Giants

The top 2 teams in the N.L. play 7 times this week, with the Cubs taking 2 of the first 3 at the Polo Grounds.  The automatic BPHRs which the park provides were not a factor in the series, as neither team rolled even one of them.  That doesn't mean runs were scarce, at least not in the series finale....

Game 1: Chicago's top 2 starters (Passeau, Wyse) have struggled so far, while all of the others have been as good as expected.  Wyse was a surgical victim today, permitting 5 hits good for 4 runs in the NYN 2nd.  The key blow was a 2-run double by the opposing pitcher, which followed one of CHN 2B Don Johnson's countless blown-x chokes.  Johnson, normally a fine fielder, treated the baseball as if it were a live hand grenade all series long.

That surgery provided all of the runs New York would get, and all they'd need.  Final score: 4-1.  NYN starter Van Mungo not only drove in 2 runs while *lowering* his batting average to .467, he also tossed a complete game and permitted just one unearned run.

=========================================================

Game 2: Paul Derringer, one of Chicago's also-rans who appears occasionally in the starting rotation, had a solid outing but one which was by no means certain to result in a victory.  The Cubs took an early 2-0 lead, then Mel Ott's 9th home run of the season halved the deficit with 2 outs in the 4th.

Derringer clung to that narrow margin through 6 frames and was lifted for pinch hitter Peanuts Lowrey in the 7th; Lowrey came through with an RBI double and Chuck Workman delivered 2 more insurance runs a couple of batters later.  Final score: 5-1, though it was far closer most of the day.

Derringer allowed just 4 baserunners in 6 innings, and Paul Erickson & Sal Maglie finished up without incident.

=========================================================

Game 3: With Luckless Claude Passeau on the mound for the Cubbies, of course the bats came out to play.  Fortunately the bats on both teams got a workout.  Each team scored in each of the first three frames, the Cubs coming out on top by the count of 9-5 at that point, but unable to shake the Giants thanks to Passeau's 5 IP, THIRTEEN hit performance.

New York batters would ring up 17 hits (but just 1 walk), while the Cubs managed only 11 hits (but 10 free passes) as we eked out an 11-8 win while LOBbing 10.

The one facet of the series where the Giants didn't dominate the Cubs on split cards (as all Cubbie opponents still do) was on the bases.  It wasn't that the visitors did so well there, but that the home squad did so poorly.  The Giants had runners gunned at home plate twice in the space of 2 batters in the 5th, otherwise they'd still be batting.  In that frame, they sandwiched 4 singles around one strikeout, but didn't score.  They also had a runner gunned down in the opener, though it made no difference in the outcome.

Alan
