Subject: Cubs @ Braves

The Cubs continue to keep pace with the Tigers, but in our case it's just a means of setting up the biggest choke in the history of mankind....

Game 1: The Braves have as much offensive talent as any team in baseball, and they outhit the Cubs today 13-8 and kept up in the other games too.  But we still had way more baserunners (and way more LOB) thanks to a slight 11-1 edge in bases on balls.

The contest went back and forth but the Cubs finally held on to win by the count of 6-4 despite closer Sal Maglie giving up his first run of the season via a surgical split card triple which led off the bottom of the 9th.  Hank Wyse (3-2) continued to pitch in mediocre fashion for the Cubs, while BON starter Bill Lee permitted runners galore (14 in 7 IP) but was touched for only 3 earned runs as the visitors LOBbed 13.

============================================================

Game 2: Paul Derringer and Ray Prim combined on an 8-hitter (7 singles) with 0 walks, but the score was just 3-1 after 8 innings.  Then we tacked on 5 insurance runs off reliever Johnny Hutchings to make it look like a rout.  Final score: 8-1.

The Chicago infield turned 3 double plays to eliminate those threats that Boston was able to muster.

============================================================

Game 3: As in game 1, a CHN starter (ace Claude Passeau, who else?) was again hit unaccountably hard and -- also like game 1 -- the Braves allowed only exactly as many *earned* runs as the Cubs did.  But we got 3 of the unearned variety, and gave just one of them back.  Final score: 6-4, same as game 1.

Boston got 2 runs on a Si 1, lo 2-20 (they got the 1); then got another run on a HR 1-2, fb(B) 3-20 (they got the 2).  Then got a 4th gift run when our not-a-4 right fielder choked up 4 bases worth of blown-x in the space of 2 batters.  But that's just business as usual for the Cubbies, and we were able to avoid becoming overly demoralized.

============================================================

Game 4: Another back-and-forth game, which the Cubs made appear not so close by scoring 3 late runs.  Final score: 8-3.

The teams combined for 21 LOB, as CHN starter Jess Flores made things interesting by issuing 7 free passes while fanning nobody.  Even so, Flores raised his record to 6-0 in 6 starts and has pitched all but 1 inning (5 CG, one 8-IP outing).

Super-slumper Jim Russell homered for the Cubs and may finally be getting back on the beam; Al Lakeman added his 3rd of the year too.  The Cubs took a respite from taking pitches (only 4 walks today) but amassed 15 hits when they swung the bats.
