Steve Garvey launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Los Angeles Dodgers
outscored the Atlanta Braves 12 to 7.

Garvey had a good evening at the plate.  He popped a two-run clout over the
fence in the 5th inning and ripped a solo home run (his 5th of the season) in
the 7th inning.  For the game Los Angeles out-hit Atlanta 17 to 8.

The victory went to Bob Welch(4-2) who went 6 innings, allowing 6 runs. Mark
Bomback got the save, his 2nd.  Rick Mahler(1-4) was hit with the loss.  He
was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in 6 innings.

MAY 17

40,735 fans were treated to a fine game at Fulton Co. Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end.  The Atlanta Braves won by the
slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.

Atlanta scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 8th inning.  After an out
was recorded, Claudell Washington ripped a solo home run (his 4th of the
season).  Los Angeles threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Tom Underwood(3-0) allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Underwood got help from Rick Camp who was credited with his 8th
save.  The losing pitcher was Mark Bomback(1-1) in relief.  He allowed 2 hits
and 1 walk in 1 inning.
