MAY 14 Steve Garvey launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Los Angeles Dodgers outscored the Atlanta Braves 12 to 7. Garvey had a good evening at the plate. He popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 5th inning and ripped a solo home run (his 5th of the season) in the 7th inning. For the game Los Angeles out-hit Atlanta 17 to 8. The victory went to Bob Welch(4-2) who went 6 innings, allowing 6 runs. Mark Bomback got the save, his 2nd. Rick Mahler(1-4) was hit with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in 6 innings. Atlanta scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 8th inning. After an out was recorded, Claudell Washington ripped a solo home run (his 4th of the season). Los Angeles threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Tom Underwood(3-0) allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory.
