Subject: Cubs @ A's

The Cubs, who have gotten more breaks (now that we don't need them) in the first 5 weeks of 1945 than we got in the past decade (when we sure could have used them), seem intent on clinching the N.L. pennant before the autoplay portion of the schedule begins.

The #1-rated offense in the majors is actually underachieving, and a good split card remains, for the most part, a foreign object to us, but none of that is having a significant impact on the outcome of games.  Not yet, anyway....

Game 1: 300-IP starter Hank Wyse (like staff ace Claude Passeau) has pitched in rather weak fashion all season long, and today was no different.  Passeau's failures are more noteworthy since he has one of the best cards in the entire majors; Wyse does not.

The CHN offense got Wyse 3 early runs, so he gave 4 back and then he and PHA starter Jim Wilson matched zeroes for a little while until Wyse departed.  It looked like the Old Cubbies were back, and we'd choke away another close one via a 10-4 romp in the LOB column (adding one of the *seven* DPs we'd hit into in this brief series as well).

But a 2-out (!) double by Stan Hack plated the go-ahead runs in the 7th and a 2-out (!!) home run by Jim Russell -- whose massive slump appears to be ending -- in the 8th made it a 7-4 final.  Wyse left after 5 ineffective innings, but Paul Erickson at long last resumed his 1946 form and tossed 4 scoreless relief innings to get the win.

=====================================================================

Game 2: Nine more LOB and 2 more timely GIDPs would have done us in ordinarily, especially since the Cubs managed just one earned run against ex-teammate Monk Dubiel and 4 relievers.  But we took full advantage of an error in a frame where we also had 7 other baserunners, to put 4 unearned markers on the board (and got one more gift run later) that made all the difference in a 6-1 win.

Chicago outhit Philly by a mere 13-5 but in earned runs it was a 1-1 tie thanks to all our charitable LOB and GIDP.

Tiny Bonham went the distance for the Cubs, raising his record to 5-0 and slightly lowering his ERA to 1.43.  Bonham was one of 3 CHN batters to collect 3 hits today, and is now hitting .316.  MVP candidate Phil Cavarretta was one of the others and is up to .397; Russell was the third of the 3-hit squad and finally crashed the .250 barrier.

=====================================================================

Game 3: This looked for all the world like the day when the 10-game win streak would end, as we minimized our LOB (7) due to maximizing critical GIDPs (4), and threw in a blown 2-0 lead to boot.  Just like the old days.

The Cubs got 2 in the 2nd off of Bobo Newsom, but Ray Prim gave them back one at a time and it was 2-2 after 5.  Chicago seemed certain to break the tie in the 8th by loading the bases with one out, but critical DP #4 came one pitch later and snuffed that rally out.

Finally in the 9th, pinch-hitter Ford Garrison stepped in for Prim and delivered a 2-out (!!!) double that gave the Cubs the lead once catcher Paul Gillespie chugged around from first.  A check of the records verified that the Cubs had thus achieved more clutch hits in this series than we had in the entire 1946 season.

Sal Maglie then registered his league-leading 11th save; that stat plus his 0.59 ERA and just one blown save disguises the fact that The Barber has been very fortunate so far in 1945, as he has actually not pitched nearly as well as it appears (mainly due to one atrocious outing).
