Game 1 Steve Rogers came through with a solid 9 innings and Mike Schmidt left the yard at BUSCH STADIUM where the Montreal Expos beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 6 to 0.
St. Louis was unable to recover after Montreal went ahead in the top of the 4th inning scoring a single run utilizing 2 base hits. Montreal managed 14 in their victory.
Rogers (6-2) went the distance for the shutout. Bob Forsch (6-4) was tagged with the loss. Rob Tomlinson was obviously impressed with the pitching of Rogers , 'That guy made us look a little silly out there tonight. We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for him. I just hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'
Game 2 Harold Baines blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI and Bill Gullickson blanked St. Louis in a very well-pitched complete game as the Montreal Expos outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 5 to 0.
Gullickson (5-2) was simply too much for the St. Louis batters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.26 to 2.84. Montreal banged out 9 on the night.
Joaquin Andujar (2-4) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 3 runs and 5 hits in 4 and 2/3 innings.
Game 3 The Montreal Expos came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 3 to 2.
Montreal came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Andre Dawson opened up the rally as he lined a single. Harold Baines followed and he smashed a two-run homer (his 7th of the season). St. Louis proved to be no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.
The victory went to John Henry Johnson (3-1) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Jeff Reardon got the save, his 10th. Bruce Sutter (1-2) took the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 2 hits in 1 inning.
Rob Tomlinson was not very talkative after his team's tough loss. 'I'm not in the mood for questions, but I'm sure Steve Bivens will be glad to talk about the game as long as you have questions to ask.'
Game 4 First baseman Gary Gray went deep and had 3 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the struggling St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 5 to 4 at BUSCH STADIUM.
Montreal wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning when they tallied 4 runs on 3 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Gray who silenced the crowd when he clubbed a three-run home run (his 5th of the season). St. Louis was retired without difficulty in the bottom of the 9th.
Scott Sanderson (5-1) went 5 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Jeff Reardon recorded the save, his 11th. John Martin (1-5) was the losing pitcher. |
