Subject: Cubs @ Tigers
The battle of the top teams in their respective leagues goes to the Cubs thanks to an unlikely 9th-inning rally in the opener; such last-ditch rallies have always been part of Cubbie contests, but almost never in our favor as has happened a couple of times this season.... Game 1: Amidst a string of typically atrocious split card results for Chicago batters, Andy Pafko came through with a '1' (wasting it -- an '18' would gotten exactly the same result) triple with the bases loaded and 1 out in the first inning off of DEA starter Al Gettel. Pafko was left at third and moments later Vince Dimaggio's gopher changed the score from 3-0 to 3-2. Just after the Cubs LOBbed 2 more in RISP, the Tigers tied the game on a 2-out clutch hit and the next batter reached on a 2-base error -- because one base simply wouldn't have been enough to put a runner on third where he could score on a wild pitch, as happened immediately afterwards. Chuck Workman's 13th home run knotted the score again, but Paul Derringer gave Detroit 3 straight singles to open the 7th. Frank Papish replaced Derringer and fanned Dimaggio on 3 pitches, then got a force at the plate. All that effort, just to set up yet another 2-out clutch hit for the Tigers. This one scored Doc Cramer and Eddie Mayo beat the throw (where are all those high split cards *now*?) and the home team was up 6-4. Still down by 2, Stan Hack led off the CHN 9th with a single and, his run being "meaningless", was stupidly caught stealing (there's that high split card!). Adverse split #46 of today's game failed to abort the rally however, as the next 7 Chicago batters reached base. Three runs scored on Workman's second homer of the day, and defensive replacements Marty Marion & Al Lakeman added 3 more RBI. Final score: 10-6. Paul Erickson was in the right place at the right time (and pitched 2 scoreless innings) to get the stunning W. ========================================================== Game 2: Chicago's Tiny Bonham bested a wild Dizzy Trout, tossing a complete game while driving in more runs (2) than he allowed (1). Final score: 8-1. Backup players at the bottom of the CHN batting order played a surprisingly large positive role: scrub catcher Len Rice got 2 hits and stole his first career base; scrub SS Bill Schuster had only a single in 4 AB but drove in 3 runs with that and a sac fly. Schuster's single keyed a 4-run 7th, as it came after 4 consecutive walks, 2 of them with the bases loaded. HAL attempted to salvage Trout's day by having the Cubs ceaselessly roll his empty 6 column, including 6 straight batters at one point along with many others throughout the day. ========================================================== Game 3: A lopsided pitching matchup featuring Unhittable Hal Newhouser and massively underachieving Hank Wyse; unfortunately it went exactly as expected. The Cubs committed as many errors as we got hits (2) and this one was over quickly. Final score: 5-0, which hardly reflects the total domination by Newhouser and the Detroit hitters, who were amply aided by the CHN sabotage defense which made those 2 errors each good for an unearned run. The series was played aggressively on the base paths, as on two occasions DPs were awarded due to "interference". One of the two factored into today's contest: with the game still scoreless the Cubs LOBbed the bases loaded once, then for an encore loaded them again an inning later when the second-base umpire rescued the Tigers and the rout was soon on.
