MAY 25 Johnny Ray had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at THREE RIVERS STADIUM as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6 to 1. In the bottom of the 2nd inning Pittsburgh went on top for good scoring one runner on 3 hits. That early run support was enough for Luis Tiant(1-7) and Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh had 9 hits for the game and Los Angeles had 3. Victor Cruz gained credit for his 2nd save. Bob Welch(5-3) was given the loss. He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. MAY 26 Johnny Ray had 3 base hits and Bert Blyleven completed the game without help from the bullpen at THREE RIVERS STADIUM where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3 to 1. Pittsburgh took the lead for good in the 2nd inning scoring a single run on 2 hits. Dave Parker slapped a one-base hit. Parker took his lead and swiped second. After another out, Dale Berra got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Ray was up next and he doubled scoring the run. Los Angeles threatened in the 9th but Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally. The victory went to Blyleven(8-2) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Tom Griffin(3-6) absorbed the loss. Billy Vanson was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in the press box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.' MAY 27 Ron Cey went deep and had 4 RBI at THREE RIVERS STADIUM where the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 7 to 6. Cey had a good day at the plate. He laced a one-base hit plating a run in the 1st inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 8th of the season) in the 3rd inning and doubled knocking in a run in the 7th inning. Pittsburgh threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Jerry Reuss(7-2) went 7 innings allowing 6 runs for the win. Steve Howe was credited with his 11th save. Victor Cruz(2-2) was hit with the loss in relief. Jim Tripodi was clearly disappointed after the game. 'It was a manager's nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have had this one.'
