Game 1 Third baseman Mike Schmidt smashed 3 homeruns and Bill Gullickson blanked San Francisco in a very well-pitched complete game as the Montreal Expos man-handled the San Francisco Giants - the final score was 10 to 0.
Schmidt was in a groove all evening. The San Francisco fans hated to see him approaching the batter's box. He ripped a solo home run in the 4th inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 6th inning and launched a rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun (his 15th of the season) in the 9th inning. Montreal had a total of 11 hits for the game.
For Gullickson (6-2) it was his 3rd shutout this year. Bob Knepper (6-3) ended up with the loss. 'I just got in the box, looked for a pitch and swung,' Schmidt said. 'That's it'.
Game 2 One run was the difference at CANDLESTICK PARK as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Montreal Expos 7 to 6.
San Francisco came up with 3 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Jeffrey Leonard who excited the crowd when he tripled bringing in two baserunners. San Francisco won despite being out-hit by Montreal 9 hits to 6.
The win was credited to Fred Breining (4-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs. Al Holland recorded the save, his 2nd. John Henry Johnson (4-2) was charged with the loss in relief.
San Francisco now has a record of 30-28. Still in a bad slump, with this loss, Montreal is 2-8 lately and 40-18 on the year.
Game 3 San Francisco Giants broke the deadlock in their last at bats, pulling out a 3 to 2 win over the Montreal Expos and sending their hometown fans home smiling.
The game was decided in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Jack Clark hit a single. Darrell Evans next to the plate and he drew a walk. Jeffrey Leonard was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Milt May was up next and he singled resulting in a mighty exciting win for San Francisco and the 27,054 home town fans in attendance. Both teams finished the game with 6 hits.
The win went to Fred Breining (5-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Elias Sosa (1-4) suffered the loss in relief. San Francisco now has a record of 31-28. Steve Bivens was pretty down after the loss. 'We've really been sputtering along lately, something like 2-8 in the last week or two. That won't get it done.' |
